The Block 2024 just wrapped up, but before you start picturing our favourite renovators rolling around in piles of cash, we’ve got some tea to spill.
It turns out that Channel Nine (which publishes PEDESTRIAN.TV) isn’t exactly rushing to transfer those fat stacks into the contestants’ bank accounts. Yep, you heard that right – our Blockheads might be waiting a hot minute for their dosh.
Let’s recap the auction drama for those who have been living under a stylishly upcycled rock. Billionaire Adrian Portelli, decided to go full Monopoly and buy all five houses for a cool $15,030,000. It’s giving major power move. This shopping spree led to some serious coin for our DIY warriors. Here is their profit:
- Maddy and Charlotte (who won): $1.65 million (including their $100,000 grand prize money)
- Courtney and Grant: $1.45 million
- Kristian and Mimi: $1.13 million
- Ricky and Haydn: $750,000
- Kylie and Brad: $650,000
Winners Maddy and Charlotte told the Daily Mail that they knew Adrian had been keen on buying their property.
“Adrian showed interest in all the houses from the start,” said Charlotte.
“We’d had quite a few conversations with Adrian over the past few weeks and spent some time together, so we knew he was keen on all the houses,” she said.
But here’s the kicker – according to a sneaky insider, Channel Nine’s not about to make it rain just yet. Apparently, they’re doling out the winnings in installments to “protect the show’s brand”.
A previous Block alum confirmed this financial foreplay to Yahoo! Lifestyle, revealing that while the prize money isn’t taxed (small mercies), there’s a catch. “You don’t get it for 12 months,” they spilled.
“It’s spread over that period so you don’t talk bad on the show and if so, you don’t get your money.”
Even 2023 runners-up Eliza and Liberty, who pocketed a cool $1.05 million, were still waiting for their first installment in February 2024.
So, while our Block stars might be millionaires on paper, they’re not exactly swimming in cash just yet.
But hey, at least when they do finally get their hands on the moolah, they won’t have to share it with the taxman. Small victories, right?
