The Block’s Ash Milton has just thrown his two cents into the mix about Jesse Maguire and Paige Beechey’s exit from the show. The 2023 ‘villain’ believes the couple shouldn’t “have [been] there” at all.
ICYMI, Jesse and Paige dramatically quit the show during Monday night’s episode after weeks of fighting. The pair spoke with a counsellor provided by the show before coming to the decision, telling their fellow contestants they had mental health concerns. The engaged couple were replaced with sisters Maddy and Charlotte.
Ash appeared on Triple M Breakfast with Margaux, Marto and Dan to spill some serious The Block tea, and the group chatted about how much “pressure” Jesse and Paige were under during filming.
“[Producers] shouldn’t have [contestants] on there like that, [mental health is] a super duper serious matter,” Ash told the hosts.
“[Myself and Leah] reach out and support anyone that’s on [The Block], just because that’s the kind of people we are, I suppose.”
Ash explained that the pressure cooker contestants are under is like nothing you’d expect, and this could have led to Jesse and Paige reaching their limit.
“There’s only 180-odd people that have done this Block experience in 20 years, and whether it’s good for you or bad for you… I’ve had a lot of people go, ‘Oh, it’d be bloody easy’ — it’s not,” he said.
“Mics go on at 5.30am in the morning and then they’ll take them off depending on the night. But like a Saturday night is your big night, the mics were pretty much on till two in the morning.”
How much do contestants on The Block get paid?
Ash also lifted the lid on how much The Block contestants supposedly get paid while they’re on the show. It’s not much, but considering they’re in the running to make millions, it’s a risk that lots of people want to take.
“You get a little bit of pocket money a day. I think it was around $100 per person per day, which isn’t bad,” he spilled.
“But you still [have] to run a house at home… I actually shut down my whole business while I was [filming]. You know what I mean?”
This means Leah and Ash earned about $1400 per week as a couple during the 10-week shoot. Not exactly the big bucks, but about on par for what other reality TV show contestants earn.
Even after talking about how difficult his stint on The Block was, Ash would still return and compete if the producers called him up.
“I’m a sucker for punishment,” he joked.
