There are a few major sales days each year we’re willing to open our wallets for and Black Friday is at the top of the list.

For retailers, the Black Friday and Cyber Monday weekend is as big as Boxing Day sales – and last year it was actually bigger than the post-Christmas sales, according to analysis from the Australian Bureau of Statistics.

For us avid shoppers, sales that come ahead of the festive season meaning we can save big when purchasing gifts, and of course, treat ourselves to an item or five.

While we’re all about indulging in a little retail therapy, particularly after the year we’ve had, the sheer magnitude of Black Friday can send shoppers into a buying frenzy that results in purchases we’ll probably only wear once.

Our tip for picking the steals out from the regrets? Evaluate and update your wish-lists ahead of time, so when sale day arrives you can see if what you really want made the cut.

Black Friday sales in Australia were even bigger than Boxing Day in 2023.

When Is Black Friday & Cyber Monday?

Black Friday 2024 is on November 29, with deals usually rolling through the weekend into Cyber Monday on December 2. That being said, Black Friday sales seem to be starting earlier every year, so take this as your cue to start your wish-lists.

Some of the best Black Friday sales can give you up to 80% off, although it varies a lot. But to give you an idea, and help you plan ahead for the 2024 Black Friday weekend, here’s a look at our pick of Black Friday fashion, beauty and home deals from last year.

Best Black Friday Fashion Deals (From 2023)

From The Iconic and ASOS to Viktoria & Woods and Abrand Jeans, there were fashion deals for all styles during last year’s Black Friday weekend. Most offers ranged from 20% off to up to 80% off, so you could expect similar deals in 2024.

Best Black Friday Shoe Deals (From 2023)

You could expect to get between 20% and 70% off shoes for Black Friday, based on last year’s sales with the likes of Tony Bianco, Nine West, SOL SANA and Billini.

Best Black Friday Activewear & Swimwear Deals (From 2023)

If you want an excuse to buy new swimwear or workout gear, Black Friday sales could be it. Last year, plenty of brands offered 30% or more off activewear and swimwear, with Black Friday sales offers ranging from 15% off to 80% off on some of our favourite brands.

Best Black Friday Jewellery & Accessories Deals (From 2023)

Black Friday sales could help you save around 20% to 60% on jewellery and accessories. Keep in mind that jewellery in particular can sell out fast (particularly for the more sustainable or boutique brands), so planning ahead and having a wish-list could help you get exactly what you want.

Best Black Friday Beauty Deals (From 2023)

Beauty deals for Black Friday tend to be a mix of percentage and cash savings. For example, last year Cloud Nine offered up to $300 off hair tools last year, Sephora offered up to 20% off and Mermade Hair offered a massive 80% off sitewide.

Best Black Friday Homes Deals (From 2023)

Homeware can cost more than a pretty penny at full price, depending on what you need. So if you can wait until Black Friday, you could save anywhere from 20% to 75% based on the deals we found last year.

How Do Black Friday & Cyber Monday Sales Compare To Boxing Day Sales?

Despite being a relatively new sales period in Australia, having originated from the United States, Black Friday and Cyber Monday are quickly overtaking Boxing Day as the biggest sale period of the year.

According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, the Black Friday sales weekend in 2023 was actually bigger than Boxing Day, with people spending more overall in November than they did in December.

“This shift in spending from December to November reflects the growing popularity of Black Friday sales and the impact of cost-of-living pressures, with consumers seeking out bargains and taking advantage of discounts in November,” ABS head of retail statistics Ben Dorber said in a media statement in January 2024.

So with most of the country’s spending falling before Christmas, our favourite brands and retailers make the most of the sale day to offer their biggest discounts during Black Friday and Cyber Monday. For us, that means we can get a head-start on Christmas shopping, or treat ourselves!
