The Right Reverend Mariann Edgar Budde has responded to Donald Trump‘s calls for an apology after her sermon at the National Prayer Service.
On Wednesday morning (local time) Donald Trump — the 47th President of the United States and giant baby — took to his social media app Truth Social to slam Budde, claiming that she was “not compelling or smart” and that the ceremony was “boring”.
“The so-called Bishop who spoke at the National Prayer Service on Tuesday morning was a Radical Left hard-line Trump hater,” he wrote.
“She brought her church into the world of politics in a very ungracious way. She was nasty in tone, and not compelling or smart.”
He said that she failed to mention “the large number of illegal migrants that came into our country and killed people”.
“Apart from her inappropriate statements, the service was a very boring and uninspiring one. She is not very good at her job! She and her church owe the public an apology!”
In an interview with American daytime television show The View, Budde made it clear that she has no intention of apologising to the former The Apprentice star. Instead, she would be open to a one-on-one meeting — as long as the invitation came personally from the president.
Speaking of her choice to use the opportunity to make a plea on behalf of LGBTQIA+ youth, Budde said she wanted to “speak a truth in a way that was as respectful and kind as I could and bring in other voices”.
In case you missed it, Right Reverand Budde was tasked with giving an address during the National Prayer Service. During her speech, she pleaded with Trump to remember the rights of Queer youth and immigrants.
“There are gay, lesbian, and transgender children in Democratic, Republican, and Independent families, some who fear for their lives,” she said.
Moving onto illegal immigrants, a central issue on Trump’s victorious presidential platform, Budde urged him not to follow through with his mass deportation plans.
“The people who pick our crops, and clean our office buildings, who labour in poultry farms and meat packing plants, who wash the dishes after we eat in restaurants, and work the night shifts in hospitals, they might not be citizens or have the proper documentation.
“The vast majority of immigrants are not criminals. I ask you to have mercy Mr. President on those in communities whose children fear that their parents will be taken away.”
Trump and his Vice President, JD Vance, clearly did not like her address and both made unimpressed facing as they listened. Considering the new policies limiting the genders in America to only male and female, plus their hard-line stance on immigration, Trump’s displeasure at the address isn’t really a surprise.
What is a welcome surprise, is Budde’s courage to speak out on a stage where she knew her message wouldn’t be welcome.
