The biggest home decor trends that interior experts say you’ll be championing in your home in 2025

A dining room with walls covered in a graphic wallpaper and mismatched seating covered in patterned upholstery.

With every new year comes a set of new home decor trends that get us excited for the year ahead, helping us power through the cold start to the year and the January blues. And there’s much to look forward to in 2025, according to our trend and interior experts.

But it’s not just them that have noticed these interior trends popping up everywhere – we at the Ideal Home office have, too. And they’re bound to get even bigger as the year goes on. So whether you’re looking for the next biggest living room trend to embrace in your lounge or the most year-defining bedroom decor trend, you’ll find it in this round-up of the best of the best home decor trends for 2025.

Of course, it’s always important to keep your own taste and your home’s style and aesthetic in mind and only choose to incorporate the trends that align with the above, rather than jumping on every interior trend that comes (and goes).

2025 is shaping up to be the year to be confident and bold with our home decor choices. What’s also firmly in is showing your personality and interests through your interiors – so just don’t lose sight of that as you embrace this year’s hottest home decor trends.

1. The mood – Cosiness

The new cosy trend already started going off at the end of 2024. But this year, comfort and cosy feels will be important to us more than ever before. This will give rise to cosy living room ideas, as well as cocooning bedroom settings.

‘As we prioritise wellbeing, searches for cosy nooks are on the up,’ says Esme Amberg, head of design at The Roost. ‘It’s more important than ever to create a sanctuary at home such as a quiet reading nook or a space for calm. A rug over hard flooring can create the warmth and texture to transform your space as well as enhance its visual appeal. Place the rug just under the front legs of a sofa and completely under your coffee table.’

Melissa Hutley, co-founder of Hutley & Humm and interior designer, agrees, ‘We can see the need and desire for calming, warm interiors that allow you to concentrate and be productive or relax and unwind.’

2. The colour trend – Dark, earthy shades

The trending colour palette of 2025 largely goes back to the overarching mood of the year – because what’s cosier than dark, earthy shades like warm browns, dark reds and purples? That’s also why Pantone’s chosen its colour of the year for 2025 to be Mocha Mousse, a soothing shade of brown.

‘We’re seeing lots of dark and moody colours and themes,’ says Colleen Bennett, interior designer and founder of CBB Design Firm. ‘Grey is starting to slowly fade and we're starting to see lots of colour, more maximalist and very deep colours. I'm seeing super neutral palettes go away.’

Chloe Barrow, interior expert at Laura James, continues, ‘Rich, earthy tones like mahogany and chestnut are going to dominate interiors in 2025. These colours create a sense of depth and elegance, perfect for spaces that feel cosy yet refined. Whether it’s through furniture, floor or wall treatments, or accessories, darker neutrals will add a classic quality to any room. Darker neutrals also offer a brilliant foundation for layering textures. They also work well with bold accent colours like mustard or teal for a striking contrast, allowing you to experiment with vibrant decor.’

3. The decorating trend – Individuality

Making your space your own is heavily encouraged in 2025 – trying your hand at freestyling is one of the biggest paint trends, while one of the biggest Pinterest Predicts Trends is Primary Play which champions painting and drawing your own furniture.

‘Upcycled furniture with unique, painted designs will take center stage in 2025,’ confirms Sophia Ayrton-Grime, founder of Studio Raff. ‘People are increasingly valuing sustainability and individuality, and upcycling offers both. It’s all about taking pre-loved furniture and giving it a new lease on life with bold colours, hand-painted patterns, or even stencilled motifs. For instance, a vintage wooden dresser painted in a striking two-tone design can become a room’s focal point. Or a dining chair set updated with geometric patterns or botanical designs can add personality to a space. This trend also highlights the beauty of craftsmanship and creativity, encouraging people to see value in reimagined, one-of-a-kind pieces.’

Dayna Isom Johnson, Etsy’s trends expert, adds, ‘In a world increasingly dominated by fast fashion and ever-changing trends, people are turning to heirloom-worthy, personalised pieces, and proudly displaying them in their spaces alongside other belongings to create vignettes that reflect their personality. This reflects a desire to bring timeless elegance into their space whilst creating a strong sense of identity in the home.’

4. The furniture trend – Dark wood

In recent years, the Scandinavian-style light wood reigned supreme in the world of furniture design. But this year, the more grown-up and sophisticated dark woods are taking over.

‘Darker woods are making a comeback, replacing the lighter oaks and pale finishes popular in recent years. Dark wood adds a sense of depth and drama to a space, pairs with both modern and traditional design styles, and works particularly well with an earthy colour palette such as burnt orange and olive green. Dark wood can transform any space in your home. Whether you’re looking for a rustic, modern or minimalist style, wood offers a wide range of options to create a cosy and elegant environment,’ Esme at The Roost says.

5. The era – Mid-century made modern

The furniture trend of dark wood also aligns with the mid-century modern style that is once again in the focus. Only this time, people are (and will be) putting a more contemporary twist on styling mid-century pieces in their homes.

‘Retro vibes are making a big comeback, and it’s all about reinterpreting mid-century styles with a contemporary twist. Their sleek, fine lines and minimalist silhouettes are a mix of cosy and cool that feels fresh but also nostalgic,’ Sophia at Studio Raff says.

Dayna at Etsy adds, ‘In 2025, I predict a growing appreciation for nostalgic styles, with vintage decor, natural woods, and cool retro colours taking the spotlight. Last year, we saw people moving away from hyper modern interiors and embracing more traditional styles in their homes and this year I expect this trend to evolve even further.’

6. The lighting trend – Sculptural lamps

‘Statement lighting will take centre stage in 2025, with sculptural chandeliers and bold pendants becoming focal points,’ says Sam Sutherland, Flitch interior stylist.

This year, we’re leaving simple, boring lighting behind and instead we’re embracing sculptural lamps as the biggest lighting trend. Why can’t a floor lamp or a pendant light be the centrepiece of a home and command as much attention and compliments as a piece of art? The answer is, they can.

7. The paint trend – Double drenching

Colour drenching was one of the biggest paint trends of last year. And while the boldness and colour confidence of colour drenching is not going anywhere, a new evolution of this very look is joining it in the spotlight – it’s called double drenching and it involves enveloping the entirety of a space in two or more related colours with different undertones.

‘Expect to see the rise of double drenching, where contrasting shades are used to define spaces and create visual interest,’ says Emma Bestley, co-founder and creative director of YesColours.

Ruth Mottershead, creative director of Little Greene, continues, ‘Since first introducing the colour drenching approach back in 2021, we have seen customers move away from traditional schemes to embrace deep and mid-tone hues from floor to ceiling and everything in between, creating really engaging, inviting spaces. This approach is set to continue with double drenching, an expansion of this colour confidence, taking the concept into a highly creative, sophisticated and nuanced approach to decoration.’

8. The wallpaper trend – Ceiling focus

The ceiling is often an overlooked space or a feature of a room, generally left untouched and white. But with the likes of colour drenching - and now double drenching - paving the way, 2025 is set to be the year of the ceiling focus. And while you can make a statement with your ceiling with the help of paint, there is something even better to create a showstopping moment – and that’s using wallpaper. That’s why this is one of the hottest wallpaper trends right now.

‘In 2025, wallpapered ceilings are adding depth and vibrant visual appeal to interiors,’ says Aino Heinäsuo, head of design at Redecor. ‘There’s a growing trend of using ceilings as part of the decor, adding a surprising and refreshing touch to a room. This approach helps to envelop the space even more, making it feel more comforting.’

9. The sofa trend – Curved shapes

Sharp angles have been fading in popularity throughout last year as the curved sofa trend has been dominating. And in 2025, curved sofa shapes are not going anywhere.

‘Curved furniture, particularly in sofas and armchairs, will continue to dominate, adding softness and a sense of comfort to living spaces,’ Sam at Flitch says.

Aino at Redecor continues, ‘Building on the trends of 2024, curved furniture and organic shapes remain prominent in 2025. These designs foster a welcoming and comfortable atmosphere, often seen as a soothing counterbalance to modern technology.’

10. The fabric trend – Natural textures

Layering various textures in a room is not even so much a trend as a timeless interior styling tool to give a space more depth and intrigue. But in the spirit of this year’s cosy vibes and focus on wellness, tactile, natural textures are championed more than ever, whether that’s teddy-like shearling or elevated chenille on upholstery.

‘Organic textures will replace the playful, abstract shapes that have been popular over the past few years. This shift reflects a growing desire for interiors that feel grounded and connected to the environment,’ Chloe at Laura James says.

Joana Sadovskaja, interior trends expert at Lovesofas, provides an example, ‘A vibrant boucle is perfect for a statement piece in a neutral-toned room, allowing the chair to be the focal point. Alternatively, use the piece to complement an eclectic design by introducing a pop of colour to a bohemian space, and completing the look with layered textures, bold decor pieces, and patterned rugs for the ultimate maximalist effect.’

She adds, ‘Suede is an elegant piece that can fit a range of interior designs but particularly works well for a chic aesthetic. Similarly, a stylish aesthetic can be achieved with a fur fabric sofa. Fur and faux fur settees work well as a statement piece and add a chic and cosy feel to a space.’

Put all together, these individual trends will create a cohesive home scheme inspired by cosiness, wellness and individuality. And that’s something we can get fully behind. Which trend was your favourite?
