The bigger picture looming large at Swansea City and the transfer situation that's now reached crisis point

The Jack Army experienced virtually every range of emotion during Swansea City's 2-2 draw with Millwall.

From sheer delight, pleasure and confidence to anger and fury, Russell Martin's men suffered an injury-time capitulation to inexplicably throw away two points.

The fact Millwall ended the contest with just one shot on target and two goals (neither of which were scored by one of their players) to their name seemingly rubs further salt into the Swansea wounds.

But now that the dust has settled, it's important to look at the bigger picture.

Swansea were dominant for long spells of the game, and while the Lions did hit the crossbar twice, Andy Fisher had precious little to do until twice being forced to pick the ball out of his own net in added time.

The hosts had 17 shots at goal, with nine of those on target which is their best return of the season so far. Add to that, they looked relatively solid from defensive set-pieces against a side who have a lot of physical presence within their ranks.

Michael Obafemi - who looked sharp in the final third - got his account for the season up and running while Ryan Manning, Harry Darling, Nathan Wood and Matt Grimes impressed yet again. Then there was Joe Allen's home debut.

The Welshman rolled back the years to show real glimpses of his talent on what was his first league start of the campaign. Even a dejected Martin manage to give a simple and accurate assessment of the 32-year-old's efforts when one final question was snuck in at the end of his post-match press conference. And the head coach also delivered one additional word that was perhaps the only response that could be mustered at the time following the late collapse.

"He was great, wasn't he? Football," said Martin. Olivier Ntcham - fresh from his winning goal at Blackpool - was a man possessed at times while Kyle Naughton was equally impressive - playing a key role in his side's second goal.

It was a performance that fans desperately wanted to see following the weekend win on the glorious Lancashire seaside, but it's impossible to escape what happened in those gut-wrenching five minutes of additional time as Darling and Wood both turned crosses into their own end. Those critical mistakes and lapses need eradicating, and swiftly.

Results may not be too different, but the overall picture is far healthier than it was a year ago when it comes to performances. Swansea have five points from their first four matches, one more than they managed at the same stage last term. The ifs, buts and maybe merchants can fairly state it should probably be nine points from 12 so far had Obafemi tapped in from two yards out with the goal at his mercy at Rotherham United and Tuesday night's mess not unfolded as badly as it did.

But the statistics behind the displays are significantly more encouraging.

The Swans have had more possession and more shots than each of their four league opponents so far this term. Rewind the clock back to August 2021, Swansea were able to dominate the ball under their new head coach, but creativity was lacking, and mistakes were rife, with the 2-1 defeat at Blackburn Rovers on the opening day being a prime example.

In the first four matches of the 2021/22 season, Swansea had a combined total of 32 shots at goal, 12 of which were on target.

In the same number of games this term, they have managed 54 shots at goal, 24 of which were on target - exactly double the amount they achieved in their opening four league outings a year ago.

Even the opposition manager was quick to acknowledge how impressive Martin's men had been at the Swansea.com Stadium earlier this week. "Swansea are very difficult to play against," said Gary Rowett after the match. "They pass the ball well and create so much movement.

"We had to ride a bit of luck because Swansea still open you up and create those moments of quality."

However, his other comment hit home hard. "We put them under pressure and if you keep knocking on the door and ask question, it's up to the opposition to see the game out," added the Millwall boss.

The improvement has been drastic, despite the fact results haven't entirely reflected that. But a separate issue remains, as it has done for some time.

With two weeks to go until transfer deadline day, the squad is badly in need of further quality additions, particularly given the shoulder injury Joel Latibeaudiere sustained in the fixture against Millwall.

The wing-back situation has not been resolved, and the club's hand has been forced given Latibeaudiere's injury. Chief executive Julian Winter and head of football operations Josh Marsh quite simply need to work out a way to help Martin get the final pieces of the jigsaw he needs in the remaining fortnight of the transfer market.

The downside to that could see another key player - namely Joel Piroe - follow Flynn Downes through the exit door for a significant sum. But, in an ideal world, the Dutchman - who is yet to replicate his stunning form from last season this term - would remain at the club while other fringe players such as Ryan Bennett could be offloaded to free up funds and a squad spot.

One or two key injuries could really dismantle Swansea's squad, and with games being packed into tighter blocks due to the World Cup, rotation is key this season.

The lack of dealings in the transfer window since Allen's arrival on July 8 has been concerning, although it's only a matter of time before there is another flurry of activity - hopefully, as far as Martin is concerned, for the greater good of his squad.
