The best soup cookbooks to make everything from mouthwatering minestrone to fabulous pho

‘Tis the season of rosy cheeks and red noses. Heading to work or popping to the shops means entering a room with an unpreventable streaming nose and the distinct appearance of someone who’s been crying – even if you haven’t, and no matter how hard you try to prevent it.

After a long day at the office or even following a short walk with the dog, we Brits will return to the warmth of our houses as though we’ve arrived home from a year-long Arctic expedition. The kettle is immediately boiled for tea and hot water bottles, and one question alone weighs heavily on the mind: what on earth should I have for supper?

Hearty and wholesome, nothing beats a bowl of delicious soup on a cold autumn or winter evening. Essential to the enjoyment of the often vegetable-packed dish is a fresh-out-the-oven loaf of bread with fluffy white innards, preferably with juicy kalamata olives baked into it, as well as a delectable crust for mopping up the remnants.

As the weather turns colder and SAD kicks in, nothing warms us from the inside out quite like homemade soup. It’s a love language in its own right and has been considered a form of both physiological and mental medicine for centuries. Chicken soup is one such example, and it’s often referred to as ‘Jewish Penicillin’ – given that it’s one of the most popular recipes across the entire global Judaic community.

From Hungarian goulash to Japanese ramen and Vietnamese Pho, we’ve curated a selection of the best soup and broth cookbooks from across the globe. Keep scrolling for mouth-watering winter warmers.
