When looking at sheets, you’ll want to decide on which material works for you. There’s no material for bed sheets that is objectively ‘better’ than the other – this is because it’s all up to your personal preference. Below are some common materials you can find bed sheets in.
Linen
Synonymous with ‘lightweight’ and ‘breathable’ is the popular textile for bedding – linen. Linen that is woven in Europe – Belgian or French Flax, for example – are great indicators of superb linen quality. Moreover, it’s a great option for summer or hot sleepers due to its natural moisture-wicking properties.
Cotton
Cotton is another very popular textile for bed sheets. It’s incredibly soft while still having the same moisture-wicking properties seen in linen sheets. The quality of cotton sheets can be determined by how long the staples are within the fabric/fibre. The longer the cotton staple, the better quality the sheets are. Egyptian cotton is known to be the premium offering of cotton sheets as its staples are extra long in comparison.
Bamboo
Also known as bamboo rayon, is also a great fabric to opt for when choosing your next sheet set. Bamboo sheets are breathable with temperature-regulating properties so a restful night’s sleep is most definitely on the cards.
Silk
As luxurious as bed sheets get are silk sheets. Not only are they soft on the skin, but it’s also a great choice for those who have sensitive skin. However, silk is an expensive material that also needs special attention when it comes to maintenance and care.
If you’ve been looking at thread count as your main deciding factor when it comes to buying new bed sheets, we’re here to add some insight. Although thread count is a key element to consider, it really isn’t the be-all and end-all of finding a good quality sheet set.
Thread count refers to the number of threads woven together per 10cm² of fabric. The general consensus is that sheets that sit around the 500TC mark are the best (for cotton sheets). It’s also important to note that thread count is not generally a good indicator for linen sheets and are often rarely listed. However, as a rule of thumb, a high thread count for linen sheets is discouraged.
