The best pubs and bars in Liverpool according to punters

There's no shortage of fantastic pubs and bars in Liverpool.

It's a blessing for the city to have so many fantastic establishments to choose from, but for drinkers looking for somewhere new to head where you should go can be a pretty daunting question. There are so many factors to take into account, from the volume levels to the bar snacks, from how well they pull a Guinness to if they do a good G&T.

We've taken a closer look at the top-rated pubs and bars in Liverpool, looking at what makes punters cast their vote and give their kudos to certain city establishments. These are the highest rated pubs in Liverpool on Google, all have over 4.5 stars and over 750 reviews.

Peter Kavanagh's on Egerton Street (Colin Lane/Liverpool Echo)

Peter Kavanagh's

An eclectic mix of items adorn the walls of this Toxteth boozer, with old radios, musical instruments and even containers filled with the ashes of former punters accompanying drinkers at the well-loved establishment. Landlady Rita Smith, 83, marked her 30th year as custodian of the pub last March.

She said a feeling of belonging when she visited the pub led her to take it over in the first place, and an impressive 4.7 rating and almost a thousand positive reviews on Google show that none of that has been lost since.

The Cavern Pub on Mathew Street (Liverpool Echo)

The Cavern Pub

Just metres away from the Cavern Club where the Beatles first made their name, the aptly titled Cavern Pub on Mathew Street boasts well over 3,500 mostly five-star reviews. Full of Beatles nostalgia, it may be presumed a place more fitting for a tourist than a local, but its "fantastic atmosphere" and live music most nights mean that it's somewhere everyone can enjoy.

Ye Hole in Ye Wall

Believed to be Liverpool's oldest pub, Ye Hole in Ye Wall off Dale Street has been going strong since 1726. A "proper English pub" according to some drinkers, it's gained itself a strong following and a strong 4.5 rating on Google is indicative of how well-loved it is among punters in the city.

The Grapes, Roscoe Street

The Grapes has stood on the corner of Roscoe Street since 1775 and is a pillar of the Georgian Quarter. Its claret exterior will be recognisable to most and for many it's one place a night out isn't complete without. And the Google Reviews reflect that, with a strong rating of 4.6 and almost 1,500 positive reviews, lauding the place for its "original charm" and "great range of real ales."

The Caledonia (Liverpool Echo)

The Caledonia

Affectionately known as The Cali, this pub on Caledonia Street is popular among the some of the city's student population and other locals for its "great atmosphere" and live music. Fully vegan, it also serves a selection of vegan food to take alongside a couple of pints. The nice "homely feel" to the pub and its other merits are shown clearly in the hundreds of positive reviews and 4.5 rating on Google.

Shenanigans

One of the city's best Irish pubs serving what ECHO readers voted as the area's best pint of Guinness, Shenanigans on Tithebarn Street, was opened by brothers Daragh, Conor and Fionn McDonald in 1997, and has since become a steady favourite. The fact it stands among some of the city's best on Google ratings is firm proof of that and reviews ("This has got to be one of the best Irish pubs I've been in Merseyside" according to one) give just a glimpse of the quality of the place.

The Railway on Tithebarn Street (Google)

The Railway

Another Tithebarn Street favourite is the Railway, another pub serving an impressive range of food in an equally impressive building. A traditional pub, the Railway sits in the heart of the business district and is enjoyed by many before they head home from work. Different specials each week, "prompt" service and a good selection of beers have helped earn this pub well over a thousand positive reviews and its 4.5 rating on Google.

Ma Boyle's, on Tower Gardens (Liverpool Echo)

Ma Boyle's Alehouse and Eatery

This popular city landmark sits just outside the St Nicholas Church gardens but its history goes back all the way to 1870 and was first a coffee shop, then later an oyster bar. Coopers Town House

The legendary little red pub Coopers sits on Clayton Square and packs a punch despite its smaller size. Landlady Maria Hodges once told the ECHO the pub was her husband's idea and he built it up from the boarded-up building it was before they arrived into the "go to" pub it is now.
