The February half-term holidays are nearly upon us.
That means from February 19 to February 27 the kids will be off-school and in need of entertainent.
If you've got time off but a limited budget don't simply sit them in front of a TV, games console or tablet.

There are equally, if not more, enjoyable and significantly more enriching free and cheap things to do in Leeds over the break.
And we're not talking about boring niche museums or endless colouring in; this is the good stuff.
From medieval ruins to the best arms museum in the country there's bound to be something to please all types of kids with cash-conscious parents.
And since the forecast is looking wet and windy we've leaned towards indoor stuff.
While some of these attractions are free things like parking aren't necessarily, but we'll warn you.
Kirkstall Abbey

The famous ruins of this medieval priory are free to visit as is the parking.
Arrive early to avoid disappointment as other thrifty parents will have the same idea.

Leeds Art Gallery
A family trip to the art gallery doesn't mean dragging indifferent children through halls of stuffy, old art.
Leeds Art Gallery has its family-friendly Artspace where you can pick up a Laura Slater activity pack and mindful sheets to colour in at home.

Leeds City Museum

The City Museum has a permanent natural history (see photo above), ancient history and local history exhibitions.
As it's the Chinese Year of the Tiger there will be tiger themed crafts plus the museum's weekly boardgames session on Wednesday during February half term (10am-12pm).

Lotherton Hall
This stately home on the rural fringes of the city includes extensive gardens, grounds (with a deer park), aviaries and play areas.
Under-fives go free while those aged five to 18 can enter for a reasonable £4.55.

National Media and Science Museum
Just down the road in Bradford is eight floors of hands-on exhibits from photography to video games.
Top Secret, a visiting exhibition on codebreaking, espionage and cybercrime fighting, will be in full swing during the February half-term holidays.

National Railway Museum

A 25-minute train ride from Leeds Station is this enormous ode to locomotives, featuring vintage vehicles, model layouts and heaps of interactive activities.
It's a stone's throw from York Station so you'll barely get your coat wet.

Roundhay Park
One of Europe's biggest urban parks cost nowt to visit and unless it's siling down, it's the perfect spot to let your children burn off some of that cooped up energy.
If the weather turns the indoor Tropical World is free to kids under five and a mere £3.80 for those aged five to 15.
Parking in one of the park's five car parks (that's a lot of "parks") is free.

The Royal Armouries
A total no-brainer.
Watch jousting knights and marvel at the greatest public collection of historic weapons and armour contained within this huge custom-built museum.
Entry is free although it helps to leave a donation to keep wonderful, free museums such as this going.
There is no free parking although there is a paid car park opposite.

Temple Newsam

The grounds of this stunning Tudor mansion are free to visit.
There is reasonably priced – although not free – parking on-site.
The house and home farm are free for children under five and £3.50 and £3 respectively for those aged five to 15.
