The best food and drink pop-ups happening in London this August

Barney Pau and Urania dinner the Hoxton

Winder Ton, founder of fragrance brand Urania, is teaming up with culinary creative Barney Pau for a fragrance-and-food paired dinner at the Hoxton Shoreditch this month. The perfume workshop and feast is set to be exactly that: a chance for guests to craft their own scent, led by Ton, while enjoying a four-course menu created by Pau.

Tickets £75, August 3, 81 Great Eastern Street, EC2A 3HU, thehoxton.com

Hearth + Tine at Bottle and Rye

(Billy Bolton)

Hearth and Tine is an Irish-led food concept from the mind of Lawrence Barrow. This summer, it’s taken residency at Robin Gill’s Tap and Bottle, Brixton. The dishes are light and seasonal, with flavours including cured sea bream with elderflower, oysters Rockefeller, smoked cod's roe with potato bread and mackerel with summer tomatoes all present in a small but well-formed menu.

404-406 Market Row, SW9 8LD, bottleandrye.com

Naz Hassan at Carousel

After his July dinners at The Sea The Sea, Naz Hassan heads to Carousel for his latest short residency. Tickets look scant, with only a handful remaining, but the eight-course menu (at £65-a-head) includes the likes of a stuffed courgette flower with paneer bhurji and beef nihari (a kind of stew) with roti and pickles. This level of creative Indian food doesn’t come around often, so it’s one not to miss.

Until August 3, 19-23 Charlotte Street, W1T 1RW, sevenrooms.com

Anya Hindmarch Ice Cream Shop

(Anya Hindmarch)

Perello olives were something of a zeitgeist food product last year, but apparently Londoners needed a little more. Anya Hindmarch’s Belgravia café flogs a tin of biscuits for £45, but the summer ice cream shop has always been a more reasonable offering, with scoops for £4.50. There is, of course, a briny olive-flavoured ice cream, but also expect Branston Piccalilli, Sarson’s Vinegar, Heinz Baked Beans and Filipo Berrio Pesto flavours, alongside McVitie’s Penguin biscuits and Bird’s custard.

Until August 18, 11 Pont Street, SW1X 9EH, anyahindmarch.com

Vegetables x Mark Diacono at Honey and Co.

Honey and Co. have been hosting an increasing number of great little pop-up dinners and its latest collaborates with food writer Mark Diacono for a vegetable-forward three course dinner. Diacono’s new book is all about bold, delicious vegetarian dinners and in the same vein, the Honey and Co. supper is set to follow suit with leeks and romanesco, tomato tarts, and Basque-style sweetcorn cheesecake all featuring.

Tickets £55, August 5, 19-21 Store Street, WC1E 7BL, honeyandco.co.uk

Rahel Stephanie at Carousel

(Press handout)

Rahel Stephanie has gone from strength to strength over the past two years, and her legendary supper clubs are a must for food lovers in London. Spoons was once a fully plant-based endeavour, but lately the supper clubs have expanded to include a handful of meaty dishes. No hardship as Stephanie’s August Carousel residency menu is set to include marinated beef ribs, gizzard skewers and a mackerel sambal matah.

Tickets from £69.5, August 6 - 10, 19-23 Charlotte Street, W1T 1RW, carousel-london.com

Cocktails in the City

(Cocktails in the City)

Returning for the summer, Cocktails in the City is back to host 20 of London’s top bars for cocktails, events, tastings and masterclasses. Event organisers are also set to give away free cocktails to 100 randomly chosen attendees, alongside bars at the event giving away a freebie for the 100th cocktail ordered. Feeling lucky?

Tickets from £22, August 8-10, Bedford Square, WC1B 3HH, cocktailsinthecity.com

Lucy Timm at Little Cellars

Chef Lucy Timm has been described as a “one to watch” and this month is hosting a number of shorter residencies across town. Timm is set to cook at Pesero and Albers, as well as a stint at Little Cellars. Timm’s CV includes Sager & Wilde and Royale, the now-closed sister restaurant to Leroy. The menu might change with availability, but is likely to include heirloom tomatoes with chickpeas and za’atar, lamb kofta with pine nuts, and white crab with creme fraiche, apricot harissa and a chive tartlet.

August 7-10, 75 Camberwell Church Street, SE5 8TU, instagram.com

Jimmy’s BBQ Club

Jimmy’s BBQ Club by Jimmy Garcia returns to its riverside spot on Southbank, outside the Southbank Centre, and this year is offering a six-course BBQ menu featuring rainbow trout and chips, a BBQ club kebab (with lamb leg shish), and passion fruit with ginger s’mores.

Throughout Summer, Queens Walk, SE1 8XX, southbankcentre.co.uk

Dr Arielle Johnson at Seed Library

(CAITLIN ISOLA)

Ryan Chetiwardena’s Seed Library is a gem of a bar, and it's set to be the venue for Dr Arielle Johnson, the former head of the noma research lad MAD and director of science at Noma projects, for a one-off five-course menu inspired by Johnson’s new book, Flavorama. Fusing science, food and drinks, engineered for deliciousness, sounds a dream.

August 4, 100 Shoreditch High Street, E1 6JQ, onehundredshoreditch.com

Eggbreak x Old Chang Kee

Nasi lemak for breakfast? Eggbreak is partnering with the Singaporean cafe Old Chang Kee to serve the Singaporean breakfast favourite, alongside a homemade sambal and chicken curry, cucumber and a crispy fried egg, at the Eggbreak cafe in Notting Hill and at their residency at the Hoxton in Shoreditch. The collaboration is going both ways with Old Chang Kee serving an Eggbreak lamb puff at Old Chang Kee in Covent Garden and Fitzrovia too.

Throughout August, 30 Uxbridge Street, W8 7TA and 81 Great Eastern Street, EC2A 3HU, instagram.com

Dusty Knuckle Summer Wine Nights Series

London’s favourite bakery is hosting four summer wine nights throughout August in partnership with the best independent wine retailers around. Newcomer Wines, Ancestral, Provisions and People’s Wine are joining forces with the pizza arm of Dusty Knuckle to sling slices and specialty pours from these fine purveyors.
