Some may feel put off from the idea of getting a dog due to their allergies which our four-legged friends could trigger.
However, there are certain breeds that don't shed much or any fur, making them suitable for those with mild allergies. Allergic reactions are caused by a skin particle called dander, which can be released when a dog sheds its coat, and can cause a sniffly nose, watery eyes or an itchy throat
According to the experts at Harringtons, breeds of ' hypoallergenic' dogs can give people a furry little pal without having to worry about constant allergic reactions.
While they aren't completely free of dander the experts explain that "many dog owners with allergies are able to own a hypoallergenic breed without any problems."
Here are some of the breeds that may be suitable for those who get sniffly around dogs:
Labradoodles
A favourite with families and for good reason. A cross-breed between the loving Labrador and hardworking poodle, these dogs are both playful and intelligent, and have inherited the non-malting qualities of their poodle bloodline.
Schnauzers
Famous for their distinctive haircut, these German farm dogs are known for their companionship and come in three sizes: miniature, standard and giant.
Havanese
Incredibly loving and affectionate, these playful pooches make great companions for older people as they don’t require as much exercise as other breeds.
Bichon Frise
These charming French dogs boast beautiful white fluffy curls that won’t make your nose itch. They do require quite a bit of maintenance to maintain that bouncy, almost cloud-like look but it’s so worth it!
Maltese
A classic lap dog, these playful pooches love cuddling up to their owners. Small in stature, their white coats can be grown out or kept short - depending on how much maintenance you prefer.
Basenji
Originating as African hunting dogs, these intelligent short haired pups have a cat-like demeanor in that they clean themselves.
Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier
Popular with families, these Irish farm dogs are intelligent and energetic, but also make great therapy dogs as they’re easily trained and obedient.
West Highland Terrier
Also known as Westies, they’re a Scottish breed famous for their glossy white coats and a curious and playful temperament.
Afghan Hound
These gentle giants prove you don’t have to think small when looking for hypoallergenic breeds. Although they don’t shed, these elegant dogs do need regular grooming to keep their long coats in good condition.
The experts at Harringtons commented: "There are many more hypoallergenic dog breeds for you to choose from, they come in all sorts of shapes, sizes and colours.
"Find the perfect one for you and your family by researching what will work best for your home and schedule. Consider how much space they’ll need, how long their walks will need to be and their nature around children, amongst other factors."
