The best Chinese takeaways in Sunderland as Chinese New Year approaches

2023's Year of the Rabbit will be welcomed in with the start of Chinese New Year, where many across Wearside will be excited to make the most of the annual celebrations taking place.

Festivities kick off on Sunday, January 22, - with plenty of events taking place across the North East for locals to make the most of.

And the Lunar celebrations will take place for 15 days, giving locals plenty of time to mark the event by going for a meal at one of Sunderland's Chinese restaurants.

For those who prefer to eat from the comfort of their own home however, takeaways offering delivery service are scattered across the city. And although many have their own personal favourites, some may still be searching for that hidden gem.

We took a look at Sunderland's best Chinese takeaways to give our readers a fair insight as to what's on offer across Wearside in terms of Asian cuisine. And although there are many more 'sit-in' restaurants across the city, today we're primarily focusing on those establishments who offer takeaway and delivery services.

The top 10 Chinese takeaways with delivery options in Sunderland:

Situated on the heart of Fawcett Street, surrounded by a litany of transport links, Bar Shu Impression is best known for their massive portions, speedy service and traditional setting for visitors to soak up.

A favourite among Chinese residents and students across Sunderland, the ex-Shanghai Manor constantly has its phone ringing on a night for hungry customers seeking beautifully-curated cuisine.

Although the name China Diner rolls of the tongue, their food is certainly a one way street.

Located a stones throw away from St Luke's Terrace in Pallion which itself plays host to an array of fast food establishments - this Chinese restaurant usually sees punters skipping the rows of takeaways and heading straight for their doors.

Known mainly for their speedy delivery and authentic style packaging, the portions from the Cantonese specialists is second to none.

Sea Road's East Garden has been a Sunderland staple for a number of years, and is often praised for its reasonable pricing and delicious cuisine.

Recognised by ThreeBestRated alongside China Diner and Buddha Belly (which also make this list) as one of the top three Chinese restaurants in Sunderland in 2019, 'Easty G' - as regulars usually dub it, has a long-standing reputation for their exciting dishes delivered to doors across the city.

One of the newer establishments to hit Wearside, Grangetown's Buddha Belly has began building quite the reputation for itself with its almost-endless menu consisting of over 144 meals.

A little steeper in terms of price, but the takeaway definitely makes up for it with their flavoursome dishes and chef specialities.

5. Good Taste - Unit 16 Pennywell Shopping Centre, SR4 9AS - 0191 534 3000

Although surrounded by an array of other fast food takeaways that are also situated in Pennywell Shopping Centre, Good Taste definitely stand out from the crowd with their authentic Cantonese dishes.

They also offer a range of 'healthier dishes' for customers who are on a strict diet, giving it an extra notch over other takeaways in the area.

6. Grindon Dragon - 9 Galashiels Road, SR48JJ - 0191 534 8888

Praised highly for their 'beautiful' food, Grindon Dragon is a go to for many in the local area, as well as those further afield.

Residing on Galashiels Road for decades, the traditional Chinese takeaway definitely seem to be doing something right, building a budding reputation for their tasty treats over the years.

The Sunderland institution leaves many happy customers coming back time and time again for their favourite dishes, showing eternal loyalty and content.

9. Restaurante Asiana Fontana - North Bridge Street - 0191 435 5360

Restaurante Asiana Fontana are a dark horse on this list, as they don't simply specialise in Chinese food alike many other entries.

The takeaway located a short walk from the city centre offers punters a choice between Italian, Chinese and Philippine cuisine depending on what tickles their fancy, making them an all rounder on Wearside.

With high-end food served up for 'good prices', Fontana has made quite the name for itself across the city, leaving punters returning time after time.

10. Great Wall - 233 Southwick Road, SR5 2AB - 0191 548 2882

Southwick's Great Wall takeaway is no doubt many on the north side of the Wear's go to in terms of Chinese food.

Reasonably priced, the takeaway has a number of speciality dishes on its menu, and wows punters from further afield with their bargain 'Chinese Boxes' - a 9" or 12" pizza box filled to the brim with the likes of spring rolls, chicken balls and salt and pepper chips alike.
