The best and worst hotel chains in the UK named

A hotel chain with sites in Edinburgh, Aberdeen and Aviemore has been named as the worst in the UK for the ninth consecutive year by a top consumer mag.

Britannia Hotels was rated poorly for categories such as cleanliness, bathrooms and value for money.

Incredibly, it's the ninth year in a row that the chain has finished last in the annual survey by consumer experts Which?.

The site asked thousands of Which? members to tell them about their experiences of large and small hotel chains, with the verdict on the Britannia being: "Stay elsewhere. Anywhere else."

The Which? team wrote: There are tiny glimmers of hope. Its 49% score is the best Britannia’s ever had. Three stars for bed comfort is a triumph by its bleak standards.

"However, a string of two-star ratings, for cleanliness among other things, as well as horrible, one-star bathrooms, shows it has a long way to go."

At the other end of the scale, Premier Inn was voted the best chain in the UK, not only was it the cheapest and best value in the top 10, it also came out trumps for cleanliness and Covid measures too – thanks to its enhanced cleaning, sanitising points and one-way systems.

Which? stated that the phrases "consistent" and "reliable" were used repeatedly to describe Premier Inn in the survey.

Other big companies in the top 5 included Crowne Plaza (78%), Sofitel (77%) and Radisson Blu (74%).

When it comes to the best small UK hotel chains Hotel du Vin (80%), with its hotels in Glasgow, Edinburgh and St Andrews, was named top.

Scoring five out of five stars for its cleanliness and bathrooms, Hotel du Vin impressed customers with its stylish rooms, Egyptian cotton sheets and powerful showers.
