Belmond Introduces A New Train Carriage Designed By Wes Anderson

Belmond Belmond / Nicolas Receveur

Revered American filmmaker, Wes Anderson has swapped cameras for carriages, and in classic Anderson style, he pays homage to the golden era age of cinema and travel in his latest partnership with travel pioneers, Belmond.

“I love trains! I have often had the chance to invent train compartments and carriages in my movies — so I was immediately pleased to say ‘yes' to this real life opportunity, and very eager to make something new while also participating in the process of preservation which accompanies all the classic Belmond train projects. They are keeping something special alive; - igniting this endangered species of travel into a new golden era.” Wes Anderson

In this exclusive cinematic design collaboration, Wes has reimagined the Cygnus carriage aboard the iconic British Pullman, A Belmond Train, and as expected, it's where style meets craftsmanship. Oh, and there’s glamour aplenty, as he’s reinterpreted the carriage through an art deco lens with a hint of modernity, to appeal to the contemporary wanderluster.

Very much in keeping with the Wes Anderson aesthetic, his magical and alluring dream-like storytelling is lovingly applied to the origins of the 1950s carriage. Here, there is a merging of symmetrical lines and a rich unique color palette that’s perfectly packaged in the Art Nouveau style.

After all, Cygnus is named after the Greek God of Balance and is often personified as a swan, and so, these references are evident throughout the design, from the intricate waves and swan detailing in the marquetry, and the silver leaf on the ceiling that reflects like water, to the swan shaped champagne coolers.

Not only is there a new tailored look, there's also an accompanying elevated guest experience with two new private coupés in the carriage. Here, there's a focus on detail, delight, and luxury with an intimate space that features 360 degree handcrafted marquetry. This can be exclusively booked for up to four guests, boarding at London Victoria where guests are greeted with priority boarding, and of course, there's free-flowing champagne available throughout the journey.

Along with plentiful fizz and a specially designed cocktail menu, there’s also contemporary British menus, all of which is served on crockery that’s exclusive to the private coupé. Guests can also travel in the open carriage as part of the regular Pullman experience, or choose to book the entire carriage for groups and celebrations up to 26 people.
