The Batman fans go wild spotting Glasgow landmarks in new DC Comics blockbuster

The Batman was released to cinemas on March 4, and has been met with rave reviews after its opening weekend.

The latest comic book adaptation sees Robert Pattinson take on the role of the caped crusader, alongside Zoe Kravitz as Catwoman, Paul Danos as The Riddler, Colin Farrell as Penguin and Andi Serkis as Alfred.

The Batman fans have been taking to social media to share their reactions to the Scottish back-drop in the film.

Even Robert Pattinson himself declared Glasgow the "unofficial" Gotham City ahead of the film's release.

Director Matt Reeves spoke with BBC Scotland's The Edit, and praised Glasgow for being the backdrop for Gotham.

He also hinted that the franchise could make a return to the city as its a stellar filming location.

"One of the things that was really important, I wanted this to feel like a Gothic American city, but one that you'd never been to," the director said.

"And so the way to do that was to choose beautiful Gothic architecture and so we went to Glasgow and honestly it was so beautiful, I wish we could've filmed there more

"I really think it's a very special Gotham, I mean what a special place."

Viewers were buzzing to spot some iconic Glasgow landmarks in the film, like the Necropolis.

One wrote: "It’s really fun seeing Glasgow masquerade as Gotham in #TheBatman however, it does make me want to see more investment in Scottish film and see work which is set in Glasgow, Edinburgh, all over this country. The cities have NYC character potential. Show us where we are from."

Another tweeted: "Someone behind me audibly gasped when they saw Glasgow in The Batman"

"every middle class culture writer talking about liverpool and glasgow in the batman: gotham looked DISGUSTING. it was AN AMBOMINATION. i found it impossible to hold in my vomit at the sight of it," joked another.

Someone else penned: "Anyone else get weirdly patriotic seeing Glasgow in ‘The Batman’??? Was sat in the cinema with a tear of pride in my eye"

Another joked: "Do find it hilarious how proud Glasgow is of being Gotham in movies like The Batman, given the reputation Gotham has in universe of being a dark and gothic dysfunctional metropolis. "See that miserable hellhole? That's us, that is!""

"the batman films extensively in glasgow yet there is absolutely zero 'we will deep fry your kebab' sign anywhere in the movie. one point to marvel i'm afraid," someone else joked.

According to production designer James Chinlund, the film-makers were looking for locations with a sense of gloomy Gothic grandeur to fit the history of Batman's fictional home town, the BBC reported.

"The idea [was] that in the 1920s and 30s, there was this incredible boom. So we wanted this base layer of crumbling, decaying ornament," he says.

"And at various points in Gotham's history, the idea was that there were these attempts at revival and renewal."

The film has so far garnered an impressive critics rating of 85% on Rotten Tomatoes and raked in $185million across its opening weekend.

The Batman is currently in cinemas.
