The Bachelorette's biggest editing blunders - from spoiled finales to botched proposals

The Bachelorette, a spin-off from the iconic dating show, The Bachelor, has had fans hooked since its inception in 2003.

The show follows a single woman who gets a chance to date various men over a period of several weeks, ahead of deciding whom she will get engaged to at the end of the season.

As viewers watch as tough decisions are made on the Bachelorette's quest to find love, some of Bachelor Nation (the show's fanbase) have also spotted some editing mishaps along the way, which have sometimes had dire consequences.

The 20th season of the show starts on Monday June 26 and will follow Charity Lawson, a child and family therapist from Columbus, Georgia with a master's degree in clinical mental health counselling from Auburn University, as she determines which Bachelor is the one for her.

Ahead of the show's new run, The Mirror has a look at some of the programme's biggest editing blunders throughout the years.

Spoiled engagement news

Bachelorette fans were furious after they spotted an editing blunder that "spoiled" the 19th season's surprise ending for contestant Gabby Windey.

During the live finale, viewers learned that Rachel Recchia's engagement to Tino Franco fell apart after he cheated and as Gabby came to offer Rachel her support, she flashed her engagement ring.

The ring proved that the Gabby had said "Yes" to her finalist Erich Schwer before the scenes had been aired.

At the time, fans took to Twitter to share their outrage over the blunder, with one typing: "Ooops, Bachelorette editors forgot to tell Gabby to take off her ring."

"Thanks for spoiling Gabby’s engagement," posted a second.

Injury mishap

Host Chris clarified the mistake (ABC)

Back in 2010, a Bachelorette contestant and pro wrestler, Justin Rego appeared in a scene wearing a cast on his left foot, only to reappear minutes later with the cast on his right foot.

As fans questioned whether the shot had been edited wrong or whether Justin had been faking his injury, the show's host Chris Harrison told Ryan Seacrest during Seacrest’s morning show.

“Our editing department sometimes — and you never notice this unless a guy has a cast on his leg — sometimes they will flip a shot just to make it look prettier,” he revealed before clarifying how Justin got the injury.

“The day before we got to [Rego’s] hometown to shoot video, he was working on these cool wrestling moves…and that’s when he broke his leg. He really is hurt, and it’s the same leg,” Chris explained.

Duplicate roses

The roses appeared again (ABC)

Fans were given mixed messages during an episode of the show back in 2018.

During the rose ceremony, Bachelorette Becca Kufrin had only three roses to give out to the four men in front of her, meaning one would be sent home.

As she entered the room, with the three roses on a pedestal, Becca gave two of the boutonnieres to Blake Horstmann and Jason Tartick, leaving it down to Garrett Yrigoyen and Colton Underwood for Becca to choose between.

She ultimately sent Colton packing but as the camera showed Jason, Blake, and Garrett wearing their boutonnieres, viewers also spotted the three roses on the pedestal in the following scene.

Fans suspected that editors either had to re-shoot Becca entering, or used a clip of her entering from the beginning of the ceremony for a reason unknown to viewers.

Familiar sweater

A huge season 17 editing blunder hinted that two of the contestants had known each other before "meeting" for the first time on screen.

Before the arrival of Blake Moynes, co-host Tayshia Adams told Bachelorette Katie Thurston that someone from her past was ready and waiting to meet her.

Although Katie was surprised, fans noticed that she was wearing the same outfit, a white jumper and skinny jeans, that she wore the week before on a group date with guest Nick Viall from last week's episode.

This meant that newcomer Blake had probably been hanging out with the cast for at least a week before appearing on screen, which the producers had edited in to add to the suspense.

"Katie wearing the same white sweater as last week, as in Blake was there last week ?? #TheBachelorette," one fan tweeted upon spotting the blunder.

A second added: "Ok is katie re-wearing the sweater from the last episode OR was this filmed previously and then slotted in????? how long has blake been there?????"
