The award-winning food truck tucked away on a Cardiff industrial estate

An unassuming food truck tucked away in a Cardiff industrial estate has been named the best street food in the capital. Originally established seven years ago, Pregos Street Food came under new ownership in the form of couple Krystian Szul and Anna Wyszomirska earlier this year and they have not looked back since.

Based on Freshmoor Road in Splott, Pregos Street Food is an opportunity for its customers to immerse themselves in Portuguese cuisine. At the recent Food Awards Wales 2023, held on June 26, Pregos Street Food won the award for Best Street Food of Cardiff, a testament to the hard work and dedication that have been put into the business. You can see the full list of winners from the awards here.

We visited the owners of Pregos Street Food at their truck to find out more about what it takes to deliver an award-winning service. And what is instantly discernible about the Portuguese food truck is the friendliness that you are greeted with by Krystian and Anna, giving you time and space to consider your options from the menu.

The menu contains a range of dishes to choose from with the Special Prego being the jewel in the crown, which is a sirloin steak on a ciabatta roll with garlic butter, lettuce, tomato, cheese, ham, and egg. Breakfast options are offered until 11am, and vegetarian options are also available for customers to enjoy throughout the day.

The pair are eager for customers to have the best experience possible with them, and are also happy to adapt dishes according to customer demands. A key value of the business is the commitment to serving fresh food, which is made possible by their daily deliveries of fresh ingredients from suppliers and vendors. The owners said that this devotion to serving fresh food will always come first, even if it means queue times are slightly longer than other food outlets.

Due to the truck’s tactical positioning on Freshmoor Road, much of the business’ clientele are individuals that work, or have worked, in close proximity to that street. Krystian says one committed customer that has since moved away from Cardiff travels from over an hour away twice a month just to suppress their Pregos cravings, an attestation to the food’s quality.

Pregos is a place with large aspirations, hoping to establish a second food truck at another location in Cardiff within the next year, as well as open a Pregos restaurant in the Newport area within the next two years.
