The number of recorded crimes committed in Cardiff so far this year has increased since the end of 2022, the latest figures suggest. In 2022, a total of 42,970 crimes were committed in Cardiff according to data for South Wales Police. Recorded crimes hit their lowest in December, with a total of 3,288.
However, data for January and February this year shows that the number of recorded crimes for the city has started to increase. A total of 3,474 crimes were recorded in January, with that figure rising to 3,551 in February, the month with the latest available data for 2023.
Cathays - the area of Cardiff that recorded the most crimes last year - also topped the list for the areas of the city with the most crimes for the first two months of 2023, with a total of 1,132 being recorded. It's important to note that the area boundary for Cathays includes the city centre, from Cardiff Central Station up to the A48, separating one side of Cathays Cemetery from the other.

As well as Cathays, other areas of the city saw a significant increase in the number of crimes committed since the end of last year. For instance, Llanrumney had reached the lowest number of crimes recorded in the area in December last year, with 73 being recorded. However, in February 2023, this figure had increased to 120.
Similarly, crimes recorded in Whitchurch and Tongwynlais reached a low of 68 in December last year, but increased to 114 in February this year. Not all areas of the city saw this increase, however. Some areas, including Splott and Penylan, have seen the number of crimes fall at the start of this year. While crimes in Canton increased to 131 in January from 118 in December, the number of recorded crimes reached its lowest figure in 12 months in February, with 94.
Below, we have put together a breakdown of the total number of crimes recorded for January and February this year and what those crimes in February were for each area of Cardiff.
