The Apprentice kicks off with massive change to series

The Apprentice kicks off its 17th series with a never done before trip across the world for the opening episode.

18 new candidates are going head to head in order to gain a £250,000 investment from Lord Alan Sugar for their own business in the hopes of replicating his success. Merseyside sweet shop entrepreneur Victoria Goulbourne is just one of the candidates throwing her hat into the ring but the new cast will soon find out the show has stepped it up a notch.

Due to covid restrictions preventing some of the bigger challenges from going ahead over the last few years, Lord Sugar decided to "come back with a bang" and fly the entrepreneurs across the world to Antigua to celebrate the new series.

Speaking to PA, Lord Sugar said: "Last year we were restricted by covid in what we could do and what we couldn't do because of the health warnings. So this year, we decided... let's come back with a big bang.

"So I said, 'Let's go somewhere great to really kick off well.' You should see the the candidates' faces when I said to them: 'Right your first task you're going to Antigua', that's wonderful. Also for the audience it will be a great kick-off for the process."

The British businessman said the series will see a number of the show's favourite tasks return which were not "do-able" during covid, as well as the candidates visiting "tremendous places" and celebrating 100 years of the BBC.

He added: "We're coming back bigger than ever before mainly because we've come out of the covid period... Look forward to the good old Apprentice type of episodes."

The Apprentice airs Thursday, January 5 on BBC One
