The Amad Diallo Rangers smoke signal that could provide vital Alfredo Morelos solution

Versatile Amad Diallo could provide Rangers with an unlikely solution to Alfredo Morelos' injury setback, if previous quotes from the winger and his former manager are anything to go by.

Diallo was brought in on loan from Manchester United late in the January window and was tipped to make a huge mark at Ibrox.

The hype hit fever pitch when he scored just minutes into his Rangers debut against Ross County, but it's been frustrating for him since with the 19-year-old losing his spot in the side.

Diallo's last start came against Annan in the Scottish Cup with Gio van Bronckhorst preferring his more experienced stars, such as Ryan Kent, Joe Aribo and Kemar Roofe in the wide positions for the big games.

Morelos' long-term injury though gives the boss a headache ahead of a key run-in.

Roofe looks the likely option to replace him for Sunday's clash with Celtic but other options are sparse, with Fashion Sakala - who hasn't been fancied up top - and Cedric Itten the only alternatives.

He'll be assessing his options in that position, and previous quotes from Diallo hint that he might fancy a crack at leading the line.

Speaking to UTD Unscripted back in June, he declared that his best position is off the right wing.

But he also confessed he has played through the middle before, and "won't argue" with his manager if he is asked to go back there.

Diallo said: "I play here like I played in Italy. Obviously, coaches set up teams in different ways but playing wide-right here, having freedom, having to attack and defend.

"In Italy it is a case of go and attack but then defend and it is the same here. I see myself more as a wide-right player, but I have always said that, in football, you should never have a preferred position.

"Okay, perhaps you have a preference, but you should be ready for anything. I have played wide left, wide right, and I have played through the middle, so all of the positions are the same to me.

"If the coach tells me to play in a specific position, there will be a reason for that. I will not argue, I will just play in that position.

"If I really have to say a favourite position, I would say wide-right, because, from there, I can dribble and carry the ball deep into the opposition’s half. So I guess it is the position I like best, but I have to be ready for everything."

It was a similar tone from his former boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer who said Diallo can play in "many positions."

He said after Diallo signed for the club: "I think he Amad is comfortable in many positions. Right-wing is probably the position he’s played the most, with his left foot coming inside.

"Then again, in the Champions League for Atalanta, he played on the left – he cut inside and he went outside, so he can play different positions for us.

“Let’s give him time to find his feet here in England and we’ll hopefully see him soon."
