'The aliens have arrived' Mysterious blue light moving through sky freaks out Scots

A mysterious blue light moving through the sky had Scots freaking out last night.

Locals in the Fife area were scratching their heads at the sight - with many concluding that the aliens had arrived on earth.

Pictures and videos sent from the area showed a blue laser shooting up to the sky.

A clip taken from the Markinch, near Glenrothes, and posted on local Facebook page Fife Jammer Locations showed the light slowly moving west.

The stunned resident filming could be heard saying: "I'm not sure if you can see this, but what the f*** is that?"

Everything from UFOs to Batman with a dodgy bulb was suggested in the comments as locals were left puzzled.

One person said: "It's aliens, here to take us away."

Another agreed: "It's nothing unusual...... Just aliens having a McDonald's in Balbirnie Park."

However a third disagreed, as he joked: "Aye that’ll be the aliens. Because if they came to find intelligent life forms, Markinch would be top of the f*****g lists of destinations eh."

Meanwhile, sharing a Batman gif, another person said: "Bulb went so had to use the blue one."

Others, however, were quick to rubbish those claims as they explained what the "phenomenon" actually was - and unfortunately the explanation wasn't quite as exciting.

The blue light was actually a laser which was attached to the roof of a train.

It is used as part of a measurement system that monitors the amount of wear on the overhead line created by train pantographs sliding along the underside of the contact wire.

Among others in the comments, one explained: "[It is the] Network Rail Measurement Train. It's a blue laser for checking bridges etc."

One angry local, however wasn't satisfied with that, adding: "I'm hoping it's aliens. None of this train rubbish, I want the aliens to visit."

Network Rail have been approached for comment.
