The Airbnb in Ancoats that's like being in a cave house on a Greek island

With curved doorways, white-washed walls and arches, this unusual Airbnb aims to spirit guests away to the iconic cave properties of the Greek Island - while you are actually in a converted mill in Ancoats.

It's the latest property available to book for short breaks from a Manchester company that is becoming known for its uniquely designed Airbnb rooms. Jacksonheim Boutique was started by entrepreneur Corin Craig Jackson in the city centre nine years ago.

He now operates dozens of aparthotel style properties available for short breaks or longer stays in the city. They include an all-pink "Boujee" apartment, and the all-black Gotham City boutique.

He started the business by simply letting out his own converted apartment in Manchester while he would "sofa surf" at friends houses - in a bid to try and raise some cash. It was in the infancy of the Airbnb phenomenon, but he could soon see what a nifty side earner it could become.

The Manchester University graduate would invest the money he made from the Airbnb lets into buying new apartments. He would then convert them to give their own individual style.

Since those early days Corin, 32, has now built up a 29-property business - with plans for another seven in the pipeline. It has become a seven-figure business with a full team working alongside Corin on the development and upkeep of the luxury boutique apartments.

The latest in his portfolio is the Santorini Boutique, which the Jacksonheim team transformed from an old toilet block inside a former factory mill in the hip city centre district of Ancoats. It has become a stunning two-bedroom residence that can accommodate up to six guests.

What was formerly a dark, awkward space inside the mill building has been transformed with clever use of light, creating the Grecian details to really open up the space. Named The Santorini Boutique after the iconic Greek island, the design is all a tribute to the striking landscapes of Santorini.

Within the limited square footage, a purpose-built mezzanine level was added, creating a secondary sleeping nook and maximising the use of space. It features an arched window akin to the famous cave houses of the Greek isles.

"Every aspect of this remarkable renovation was carefully considered," said Phoebe Desser, Interior Design Lead on the project.

"We designed bespoke furniture for the bedroom and living room, merging functionality with style, and the unique textures throughout the space, such as the specialist microcement flooring, beautifully mimic the rough plaster found in traditional Greek homes."

Corin added: "The world-unique Santorini cave houses or “yposkafa” are a design that exists nowhere else on Earth other than Santorini itself, due to the island’s unique geomorphological conditions, until now. This is a one-of-a-kind home and it is a pleasure to bring this property to life in Manchester, and make it available for everyone to experience."

In addition to its novel design, guests can expect "the meticulous attention to detail and the highest level of service that The Jacksonheim Boutique has become known for" says Phoebe. It features two king bedrooms, one bathroom and an open plan living, dining and kitchen space.

Guests with accessibility issues are warned that due to the "authentic cave style homes commonly found in Santorini, there are areas that are raised with steps to access."

The Airbnb entry for the property says: "The apartment is perfectly located on the eastern edge of the city centre in Ancoats, looking over a beautiful green space and conveniently placed seconds away from the New Islington Metrolink stop.

"You’ll benefit from being seconds away from canal-side walking paths, getting to enjoy the peace and tranquillity that New Islington has to offer, all whilst being moments away from the best spots in Manchester."

It continues: "No expense has been spared when designing this property and we have thought of everything our guests might need. You’ll find the kitchen to be kitted out to perfection, ready for anything from serving up one of Manchester’s many amazing takeaways, to preparing your own homecooked meals from scratch."

The apartment is available to book from £120 a night on Airbnb here, as well as through the Jacksonheim Boutique website here.
