The abandoned 'asylum' near Edinburgh being transformed into a new housing estate

An abandoned asylum and former war hospital in West Lothian has seen a complete transformation in just under a year.

Bangour Village Hospital was a psychiatric institution and accompanying maternity ward in the Dechmont area of West Lothian.

Before the Village Hospital became the main institution for the county, it formed part of the much larger Edinburgh War Hospital, servicing many patients.

The temporary wartime space was highly praised for its burns and plastic surgery unit throughout the Second World War, as it was established in 1940.

Following this, the Village Hospital was renamed as Bangour General Hospital, and acted mostly as a maternity facility and psychiatric institution.

When St John's Hospital in Livingston, West Lothian, was opened by the Queen in 1989, Bangour General saw a majority of its services moved to the new establishment.

The last remaining ward, the psychiatric ward, closed down in 2004, with locals citing the reason this specific ward staying open was down to the amount of inpatients the asylum held.

Since then, the buildings within Bangour Village and General Hospital have remained derelict, with many ghost-hunters and curious locals visiting the site to discover what was left behind.

Two history buffs, who run the Abandoned Scotland YouTube page, visited the hospital three years ago, before there were talks of demolishing.

The unnamed pair explored inside the wards, and found torn off death-lists, ward beds left untouched, and the official plaque citing the opening of the building.

And now, up to 1000 homes are being built in the location of the hospital, with very few of the original buildings remaining.

Some of the hospital buildings, including the church, are under a protection order due to their historic presence, and will remain standing - as long as they don't become dangerous.

Plans were approved in July 2022 to build over 900 homes, a primary school, shops and leisure facilities.

The plans also include a new single stream primary school potentially including the reuse of the hospital’s former recreation hall, repair or replacement of the cricket pavilion and retention of a local village shop.

It also has the potential for a family pub/restaurant, coffee shop/crèche and community use.

History lovers and ghost fanatics will be sad to see the looming site be changed, but the retention of some of the buildings will ensure that the background to this deeply rich institution will remain for years to come.
