Chappell Roan is an artist who doesn’t live by the status quo. From her music to her aesthetic to the way she navigates fame, she’s been very clear that she’s doing it her way.
In a very candid interview, Chappell sat down with Call Her Daddy host Alex Cooper. For an interview spanning almost an hour and 30 minutes, the pair go through Chappell’s career, chatting about song inspiration, her relationship with her fans and her show-stopping fashion choices.
If you don’t have that long, here are the nine biggest revelations we learnt from the interview.

The 9 things we learnt from Chappell Roan’s interview
1. The reality of her iconic all-green Lady Liberty look: “I had to spread my cheeks”
Chappell is known for her incredibly creative, drag-inspired looks. One of my personal favourites was the Statue of Liberty outfit she wore during the 2024 Governors Ball Music Festival. The detailed look saw her paint her entire body green — and I mean entire body.
“I just spread my cheeks and get spayed with green,” she told Alex, noting that it was also incredibly difficult to get the paint off.
“Like, it didn’t come off. The way I got that off was I took three baths, not soap, dish soap. I literally poured dish soap in and scrubbed, rubbed my whole body with coconut oil, jumped in, scrubbed with a literal, like, kitchen sponge.
“I literally looked moldy for four days. My pubes are pulling out from it all. I’m not even, like, lasered or anything.”

2. The distinction between her stage name and real name
Chappell has been pretty open and upfront with her audience about how she wants to be interacted with by fans. Back in August 2024, Chappell shared a statement on her Instagram and a video on TikTok setting much-needed boundaries with fans. This included her asking fans not to refer to her by her birth name, Kayleigh Amstutz, instead of her stage name.
“How do you decide when you have people call you Chappell or Kayleigh?” asked Alex.
“When I’m at work, Chappell. But like, none of my friends call me Chappell or anything.”
3. Her pop icons growing up were…

Iconic answers for an iconic woman.
4. She thinks people are scared of her
“I think people are scared of me. I think I made a big enough deal of people not talking to me that people don’t talk to me,” she laughs.
She says that even when she’s around friends who are artists, they describe the flow-on effect of Chappell’s clear boundary setting with her fans as a “forcefield”.
“I’m like, damn baby you say it too! Don’t touch me, don’t look at me, don’t come over to me, I don’t know who you are, and they won’t come up to bother you.”

Speaking on her decision to speak publicly about the way negative fans interacted with her.
“It hurts. I know it really hurts people because they feel like it’s me disrespecting them, that I owe it to them, and that ‘how dare I call it abuse’ or complain about success, I get that a lot,” she explained.
“I’m not complaining about success, I’m complaining about creepy behaviour. I love admiration, everyone loves admiration. I just don’t want you to interrupt me when I’m having a fight with my girlfriend. Don’t fucking be like, ‘can I have a photo?’ when I’m crying talking to my girlfriend that’s fucking crazy.”
Although Chappell has pretty strong views on what the experience of fame should be like as a mega-star, she understands that she’s breaking the common procedures for famous people.
“Of course it’s going to take a second for people to really look at themselves, and I have to have grace for that. How would I have known any better? If I saw Hannah Montana, I’d have to tell her that I love her music so much and that she means a lot to me.
“But in reality, no I don’t, because that’s not Hannah right there. That’s Destiny Hope Cyrus,” she said with a giggle.
5. People expect her to be a queer expert because she’s gay
“People expect me to play by different rules because I’m gay and I should be more politically correct about that, and I should actually be way more knowledgeable about it,” she said.
“So I get asked a lot of fucking crazy questions that a lot of my peers would not get asked. And that’s because I’m gay and that’s because I have my opinions, but that doesn’t mean I’m completely like, I don’t know everything about every topic I have opinions on, like being gay.”
Although the singer notes that she wants to be more politically correct and knowledgeable about important topics, she thinks she’s held to a different standard.
“I don’t know everything about every topic I have opinions on, like being gay. I don’t know everything about being a woman. I don’t know everything about fucking fashion or drag or performing,” she explained.
“I try to know everything I can, but when I don’t answer a question correctly or I don’t acknowledge one community, it’s like, how can I do it all?”

6. Her younger self wouldn’t recognise her today
For Chappell, who grew up in the conservative Midwest of America, being an expressive, gay performer sharing her art with the world on such a major scale is still a shock.
“I don’t even know if my young self would be able to register that as a part of me. That’s how removed… I was so, so, so opposite of me now,” she explained.
“It just wasn’t awakened. Young Kayleigh just felt so restricted because I was a problem child and so angry and so depressed, and I felt like no one understood me.
“Now, that part of me is so alive … I just wanted to be free, but I didn’t think it would actually happen. Now that it has, it’s like she wouldn’t believe it at all. I don’t think she’d believe that this is what I do.”
7. She’s in a serious relationship
Although Chappell said she is an advocate for people staying single, she admits she’s currently in a relationship.
“It’s serious. I’m very in love, but I am pro-single,” she said, notably keeping the identity of her partner a secret.
“Everyone should be single,” she continued.
“I’m serious. Be single. Stop dating. Be single. Have a great time alone. Find out for yourself if you can 100 per cent be okay alone before you date. That’s what I found out.”

8. The shitty moment that inspired her song ‘HOT TO GO!’
One of Chappell Roan’s biggest bops is the high-tempo smash “HOT TO GO”. Although the track feels eternally optimistic and sounds like it’s sung from a perspective of someone in complete control, Chappell revealed that the song was originally created after a moment of insecurity stuck with her.
“I will never forget this,” she said.
“I was standing in line at lunch, and there were two girls in front of me, and they didn’t know I was standing back there but they were talking about me,” she said.
“Let’s say the boy’s name is Johnny Caroline. They were like ‘do you know who’s dating Johnny Caroline?’ and they were like ‘oh no, who?'”

When one of the girls said it was Kayleigh Amstutz, the other girl asked who she was. She replied: “Oh, you know, she’s not hot, but she’s pretty. She’s like, pretty, but she’s not hot.”
“So when I wrote ‘HOT TO GO’, that’s why I’m like, ‘call me hot, not pretty’ because that was so ingrained in my heart. Like, I want to be the hot girl, I don’t want to be called pretty. But I wasn’t, I wasn’t hot in high school.”
In response, Alex noted that everyone who was hot in high school absolutely peaked, and that’s sooo true.
9. The sexual experience that helped create new queer anthem ‘The Giver’
Chappell Roan’s latest tune “The Giver” has instantly become a hit for the queer youth on TikTok. Hell, even the straight girls and boys are getting amongst the track, even though it was literally inspired by how selfish men can be in the bedroom.
“I think about hooking up with women compared to men and how much women give to their partner,” Chappell told Alex.
“Specifically in fem relationships, it’s such an understanding that it’s so giving. I just feel like when I was with men, it wasn’t mutual.
“When I started hooking up with women, I realised how easy it is, actually. I realised how easy it is to eat a girl out.
“You know what’s hard? Sucking dick. Eating a girl out, you can lie down. I was fooled. I was foolish to think that, of course, it wasn’t as hard as what I was doing for men.”
Amen. We love an honest queen.
