Astrud Gilberto died at the age of 83, according to the Associated Press.
The story of her career as a singer is one of the most fascinating tales, if not the most unexpected.
She was married then to Brazilian singer-songwriter Joao Gilberto, a legendary figure in bossa nova. When he recorded the seminal Getz/Gilberto, the album that would take the 1960s bossa nova craze in the United States to new heights, she was invited to sing The Girl From Ipanema in English.
She wasn’t a professional singer then. But that record launched a career that spanned decades.
Let’s look back at some of her best songs, in no particular order, but we have to start with the biggest hit:
1
The Girl From Ipanema
One of the most perfect recordings ever — yes, I said it — that combines Joao’s vocals and guitar, Stan Getz’s wistful solo, and Astrud’s gentle, breathy take.
2
Corcovado (Quiet Nights of Quiet Stars)
Here’s a live performance. That same approach you heard above is here, and it’s beautiful.
3
(Take Me to) Aruanda
I just love this recording. There’s joy and fun in here.
4
Fly Me to the Moon
The jazz standard with a Brazilian twist.
5
Dindi
Even a love song has a tinge of sadness with her on the mic.
6
Agua De Beber
Classic.
7
The Telephone Song
This one is so fun.
8
So Nice (Summer Samba)
Kitschy, but I love it.
