When talking about legends in television who helped turn the medium into what it is now, the name Norman Lear needs to be on that list.

The producer and writer died on Tuesday, which was revealed on Wednesday morning. He was 101 years old.

Lear’s shows that began rolling out in the 1970s took television to new heights — series that challenged the status quo, asked questions and deealt with subjects that many viewers were grappling with, and had fully-formed characters.
