NBA basketball has undergone significant changes in recent years, particularly in the way more traditional big men are valued in the league. Such players, who were once top prospects, now struggle to find a place in the league due to their lack of versatility.
The game has shifted towards favoring players who can shoot from the perimeter and switch defensively. This has led to a decline in traditional low-post scorers and dominant rebounders making it to the NBA. Despite their skills, many big men are unable to adapt to the changing demands of the game. On their eponymous CLNS Media podcast, Bob Ryan said the 3-point shot now “owns” the NBA and Jeff Goodman and Gary Tanguay made such a compelling case for 3-point dominance that Ryan shocked by saying, “the 4-point shot is coming to the NBA in my lifetime.”
Is this the endpoint of offensive evolution in the league? Or will other changes predominate?
