The 4 major takeaways from The Marvels trailer, including Iman Vellani’s big screen debut

Buckle up, The Marvels is coming. Marvel Studios gave us our first glimpse of the trio of Captain Marvel (Brie Larson), Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris) and Kamala Khan (Iman Vellani) in November’s new entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).

MORE: Secret Invasion trailer shows Nick Fury is ready for “one last fight”

In just under two minutes, the teaser trailer shows us a LOT and sets the stage for what could be an epic adventure. Slated in Phase 5 after May’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and the Secret Invasion series on Disney+, The Marvels will tie together several storylines while moving things forward.

Here are four big takeaways from the trailer.

The Disney+ shows will be crucial

If you haven’t watched Wandavision or Ms. Marvel, you might want to get on that. Judging by the trailer, Monica Rambeau’s turn in Wandavision and all of Kamala Khan’s antics in Ms. Marvel will prove to be crucial for The Marvels. Previously, we had light mentions of Wandavision with the release of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, but it was more of a loose reference to the Darkhold before completely undoing all of Wanda’s personal growth after Westview (don’t get me started).

The origin of Rambeau’s and Khan’s powers are uncovered in their stories, as is the connection to Captain Marvel at the end of Ms. Marvel.

Iman Vellani is a star

Casting Vellani was a brilliant decision by Marvel Studios, and that rings true again with this trailer. She’s bright, funny, is impeccable with her timing and brings a youthful exuberance to the MCU that was desperately needed. The Ms. Marvel lead has an enthusiasm about her character that transcends onto the screen. Critiques of the series included it being too centered on teenage or childish things, but Vellani does an amazing job of lighting up the screen as her character learns to deal with everything that comes with turning into a superhero overnight (and meeting her super-idol, Carol Danvers).

A litter of Flerkens?

Goose the “Cat” was a star of Captain Marvel, shocking audiences as the orange critter opened its mouth to terrifyingly eat several people and objects. When we last saw her, she was regurgitating the Tesseract on Nick Fury’s desk in the second post-credit scene.

Now, she’s not only back — and terrifying Kamala Khan with the same trick — but it appears she’s brought …kittens?

Nick Fury still alive!

Speaking of our favorite eye patched man, Fury is heavily featured in this trailer, meaning he (hopefully) makes it out of Secret Invasion unscathed. With the series dropping June 21, 2023, it lends to reason that Fury emerges victorious and is still with us to run things behind the scenes in The Marvels.

We have thought that we were seeing Nick Fury before, however. That time — in Spider-Man: Far From Home — it turned out to be Talos (Ben Mendelsohn), a Skrull General, impersonating him.
