The 2025 Mitsubishi Outlander Is Getting the Trail Treatment

Rugged appearance packages are all the rage right now, and Mitsubishi is ready to jump in with the 2025 Outlander Trail Edition. The beefed-up SUV was previewed at a special event in California ahead of a planned on-sale date later this year.

What can you expect from the Trail Edition? In short, lots of black trim. The mirrors and door handles are black, and all the chrome on the front clip is blacked out. Bold black trim outlines the wheel wells, and black cladding covers the bottoms of the doors. On the hood, you'll find black Outlander accents on the sides with a big ol' black stripe down the middle. Prominent roof rails are black, the roof spoiler is black, and the window trim isn't black... but the chrome is darkened. Mitsubishi adds special Trail Edition badging, and it rides on trim-specific 18-inch black wheels.

Mitsubishi doesn't mention anything about mechanical changes. The example we saw had a set of BFGoodrich all-terrain tires, but it was a pre-production model. Likewise, additional drive modes aimed at off-road antics are unknown. But Mitsubishi representatives did tell us it's aimed at customers who embark on weekend adventures in the wilderness. Take that as you will.

For 2025, all Outlanders soldier on with the 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine producing 181 horsepower. Power goes to either the front wheels or all four through a CVT; we'll assume The Trail Edition is all-wheel drive only considering its off-road theme. It will slot between the SE and SEL but pricing will be announced later. We're expecting a figure somewhere in the mid-$30,000 range.

With the addition of the Outlander Trail Edition, what about the Outlander Ralliart? It's not listed in Mitsubishi's roster for 2025, but a company spokesperson told us the Trail Edition was not a Ralliart replacement. As for Ralliart's future, nothing is confirmed but there could be room in the Outlander lineup for something a bit more dynamic wearing Ralliart stripes. For that, we'll just have to wait and see.

The 2025 Outlander lineup receives some minor updates including a larger 12.3-inch touchscreen and a spiffy new Yamaha-designed stereo, among other things. We're driving it now and will have a full review coming soon.
