The 2022 number plates banned by the DVLA for being too rude

The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency has announced its list of banned number plates for the year - and they include some funny oddities. Anything related to covid-19 appears to be banned, for example, along with words that look like "turd".

There are also the obvious examples of anything that looks like a swear word, such as BA22 TRD or M22 FKR, plus those that have rude acronyms in them, such as BJ22 GAL. You can see all the examples we know of at the bottom of this article.

The list of banned words comes as new rules come into force around number plates for this year. The new rules mean plates now have to abide by higher durability standards, meaning they should be more resistant to salt and dirt.

Additionally, the new rules mean two-tone number plates, which use different colour shades to create a 3D effect on the lettering, will be banned. This means Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras will be better able to read the lettering.

Separately, cars newly registered are now being given "22" plates, not "71" plates as previous. This means that any cars registered before the change could therefore be cheaper to buy.
