The 1975 give Newcastle a Brown Ale soaked night of surprises -from Lewis Capaldi to Tim Healy

There are certain gigs you just had to be at to fully appreciate what went on and The 1975 in Newcastle on Wednesday night was definhitely one of those.

The return of Matty Healy to the land of his famous parents was always going to bring out a packed crowd; but the atmosphere inside the Utilita Arena was something else. The 1975 are a band that, despite all of their success worldwide, some are still far too quick to write off or dismiss, but there was nothing but love for them in the Toon on Wednesday.

A show drenched in Geordieness while unmistakeably a 1975 production, the gig had everything, including a few things that not even Nostradamus would have tried to predict.

The well over two hour set gave Matty, his family, his bandmates and the whole of Newcastle a night to remember for a long, long time.

Raw meat

We’ll get this one out of the way early doors. The headlines from the last few months don’t lie - frontman Matty does chow down on a slab of raw meat on stage. Why? Who knows but what made this a surprisingly delightful moment is the fact he washed it down with a bottle of Newcy Brown - every cloud and all that!!!

Lewis Capaldi

London may have got actual Taylor Swift as The 1975’s a few weeks ago, but did they have one Lewis Capaldi singing Taylor Swift? No, they did not; that was treat reserved just for Newcastle...although the Scottish BRIT winner was introduced to the stage as Harry Styles!

Local Hero

Sam Fender clearly isn't the only star who likes a bit of the Mark Knopfler classic to arrive on stage to. You could hear a pin drop in the packed to the rafters arena as the recognition that the band were playing the NUFC anthem sunk in and, after making his return to the mic, Matty defiantly said: "We’re going to get in the Champions League. We’re going to get in the Champion’s League - with belief! We love playing Newcastle, I grew up here."

The night ended up being a bit of a family affair for frontman Matty as dad Tim very nearly stole the show with a rendition of All I Need to Hear, before Matty said he owed the Auf Wiedersehen Pet and Benidorm actor 'everything.'
