The 15-year wait for Scotland matches to be made available without a paywall

Finally, after being predominantly behind paywalls since 2010, Scotland national football team matches are set to return to free-to-view television.

For well over a decade, the Tartan Army have had to rely on subscriptions to broadcasters like Sky Sports, Premier Sports, and more recently, Viaplay, for access to live coverage of the national team’s games.

But now, thanks to a new agreement, supporters will be able to watch Scotland’s matches without the need for a paid subscription.

The new deal, secured by UEFA and signed with the BBC, will see Scotland’s UEFA Nations League play-off double header against Greece this month broadcast live across the country.

The matches, taking place on March 20 and 23, will be shown on BBC One Scotland and BBC iPlayer, marking a significant milestone for football fans wanting to catch the action at no additional cost.

As part of the agreement, the BBC will also provide live coverage of every 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier involving Scotland.

Key fixtures are also expected to be transmitted to reach a wider UK audience.

This deal adds to the BBC’s already robust football programming, which includes live coverage of the Scottish Premiership, Championship, Scottish Cup, and Scottish Women’s Premier League (SWPL) on television, radio, and online.

Fans will not only have access to the matches themselves but will also benefit from enhanced coverage across the BBC Sport app and BBC Radio Scotland, ensuring that supporters have multiple ways to stay up to date with their team’s journey.

This move comes as a welcome relief for many fans who have longed for a return to free-to-air coverage of their national team.

As recently as November, Scotland matches were even reduced to being shown by Viaplay on an unreliable YouTube stream rather than through an official TV channel.

And that certainly would’ve locked numerous segments of punters out of being able to tune into the action.

With the 2026 World Cup qualifiers on the horizon, this new partnership marks an exciting era for Scottish football, offering fans unprecedented access to their team’s bid for the prestigious tournament, set to be hosted across North America.
