A number of care homes across the Merseyside region have been ordered to improve.
Care Quality Commission (CQC) is the independent regulator of health and adult social care in England. They carry out inspections at care facilities across the region including care homes, GP services and hospitals.
After inspecting the premises, they publish reports about the service and rate their performance. They are given a rating of 'outstanding', 'good', 'requires improvement' or inadequate'.

There are currently 12 care home in Merseyside which has been given the lowest rating - inadequate. This means the service is performing badly and the CQC has taken action against the person or the organisation that runs it. In some cases, the rating was inherited from a last inspection with the previous provider.
