The end of a long transfer saga is finally in sight for Manchester United fans – although they’re not getting too far ahead of themselves just yet.
As reported by the Manchester Evening News , United are edging closer to signing Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong. United and Barcelona are hopeful of reaching an agreement for De Jong soon as he prepares to return from his holiday this week.
The MEN revealed United submitted an improved bid for De Jong last week, and sources say it is a matter of "when, not if" the deal is finished. Barcelona are still holding out for an overall fee of around €75million, with United sources saying the deal is still not concluded, with "significant complexity to work through".

Nevertheless, the long process of bringing De Jong to Old Trafford looks to finally be approaching its end. Thursday will mark 50 days since United first made contact with Barca. While fans are happy to see the deal close to the finish line, some aren’t yet getting ahead of themselves.
New United manager Erik ten Hag has long been pushing to sign De Jong, having identified him as an ideal target after working with him at Ajax. Ten Hag is eager to sign the midfielder in time for United’s pre-season tour of Thailand and Australia, with the squad making their way to Bangkok on July 8.
