Thanksgiving Travel Plans Shift Amid Rising Inflation

People travel for the Thanksgiving holiday at O’Hare International Airport in Chicago

As Thanksgiving approaches, many individuals are facing hesitancy when it comes to making extensive travel plans for the holiday season. Recent data from Bankrate reveals that a significant 83% of holiday travelers are altering their traditional Thanksgiving plans due to the impact of inflation. This adjustment includes various strategies such as shortening the duration of trips, opting for more budget-friendly accommodations, and engaging in less costly activities.

One of the primary reasons contributing to this hesitancy is the persistent rise in grocery prices, particularly affecting the cost of preparing a classic Thanksgiving dinner. The Consumer Price Index, which tracks changes in consumer expenses, has surged by 2.6% over the past 12 months leading up to October.

For instance, Amy Knebel Larsen, a 44-year-old resident of Sacramento, California, and her family of four have decided to forgo the traditional turkey dinner this Thanksgiving in favor of attending a significant event. Larsen's 8-year-old son, Nathan, is participating in a USA BMX National Championship scheduled to take place in Tulsa, Oklahoma. To ensure a smooth journey for Nathan and his BMX bikes, the family has meticulously planned their travel itinerary, opting for Southwest Airlines flights with layovers in cities with stable weather conditions like Phoenix and Las Vegas.

Furthermore, Larsen and her family were proactive in securing their flight bookings shortly after Southwest Airlines released their schedule. This strategic move was aimed at avoiding the surge in airfare prices typically associated with peak travel periods, ensuring a cost-effective travel experience.

Despite missing out on a traditional family Thanksgiving dinner for the third consecutive year to support Nathan's BMX competition, Larsen emphasizes that the essence of Thanksgiving lies in cherishing moments with loved ones rather than the specific day or location. She highlights the importance of being together with family and friends, regardless of the meal or setting.
