Taking to social media, Izz Cafe owner Izzeddeen Alkarajeh thanked his customers for their messages of support, posting: “I can confirm that last night around 3:40am that we were broken into and our cash drawer was robbed.
“The Gardaí have been a great help today and are conducting their investigation. Thankfully nobody was present or armed. It was a shock but we’re glad the damage was minimal, we will open tomorrow for business as usual, thank you very much.”
A Garda spokesperson told CorkBeo: "Gardaí are investigating a burglary that occurred at a business on Georges Quay, Cork, at approximately 3:30am this morning, Tuesday, February 7, 2023. No arrests have been made, investigations are ongoing."
The restaurant will open for business as usual on Wednesday.
The food spot is run by Izz and Eman Alkarajeh who were living in Direct Provision when celebrity chef Darina Allen took notice of their Middle Eastern 'pizzas’. The chef convinced the pair to go work for themselves, backing them to set up a food business.
The business began as a small stall at Mahon Point Farmer's Market, with the couple’s food and café winning over the people of Cork.
