Covid-hit Thailand failed to win an automatic berth for the 2023 Fifa Women's World Cup after losing 3-0 to Taiwan in India on Friday.
It was Thailand's second defeat in as many games in a three-team play-off following their elimination from the AFC Women's Asian Cup.
The Chaba Kaew were beaten 2-0 by Vietnam in the first play-off match.
The Thais will now enter a 10-team inter-confederation tournament, which offers three spots at the 2023 World Cup to be held in Australia and New Zealand.
Taiwan now need a draw with Vietnam on Sunday to earn a World Cup place. The Taiwanese or the Vietnamese will join Thailand in the inter-confederation event.
Thailand had only 14 players in Friday's game and also were without coach Miyo Okamoto due to a Covid-19 outbreak in the squad.
Her Japanese compatriot Natsuko Todoroki took charge of the Chaba Kaew.
Su Yu-Hsuan scored twice after 44 and 84 minutes and Chen Ying-Hui added the other goal for Taiwan in injury time.
Despite missing several players, Thailand were the early aggressors with Taiwan goalkeeper Tsai Ming-Jung one of the busiest players in the opening minutes.
With limited resources, Thailand's stand-in coach Todoroki was forced to bring on Taneekarn Dangda in the second half although she was not fully fit.
Taneekarn collapsed after the final whistle but was safe, Thai officials said.
Thailand are hoping to claim their third World Cup appearance through the inter-confederation tournament.
The top four teams from the Women's Asian Cup -- China, Japan, South Korea and the Philippines -- have secured automatic berths at the World Cup along with co-hosts Australia.
