Thailand Post to have EV fleet within 5 years

Mr Dhanant anticipates that energy costs will be reduced by at least 30% from fully switching over to electric vehicles.

Thailand Post aims to replace its existing postal vehicles with electric vehicles (EVs) within five years as part of its sustainable growth strategy.

The company also wants to cut its greenhouse gas emissions to zero by 2050.

Chief executive Dhanant Subhadrabandhu said Thailand Post had started the switch to EVs over the past few years, beginning in Bangkok, Phuket and Chon Buri.

The company plans to switch to 250 EV vans operating on major delivery routes by the end of 2023.

Thailand Post announced an environmental, social and governance (ESG) mission as part of its core strategy for all operations this year.

The company rents around 3,000 vans for delivery, while roughly 20,000 drivers own their motorcycles.

Mr Dhanant said that once the full switch to EVs was completed, Thailand Post's energy costs will be reduced by at least 30%.

"The switch to electric vehicles is in the process of all-round evaluation as there are several factors involved such as space and loading area management, speed and routes of transport," he said.

The company has been optimising its daily transport routes, which could have saved more than a million litres in fuel over the last year.

Along with the installation of solar rooftops at post offices, all these efforts are aimed at creating a positive impact through the increased usage of alternative energy.

Mr Dhanant said the company recently outlined its 2023 operating plan to become a comprehensive postal and logistics service provider according to international standards through its global cross-border solutions, data-driven transport solutions, and solutions created through the partnership.

The company is also seeking new revenue streams from S-curve services such as non-fungible token stamps.

Its global cross-border service solutions involve its plan to offer fulfilment facilities in tariff-free zones to support e-commerce, develop bonded warehouses to deal with cross-border products, and pursue other services such as an international express mail service.

The company's data-driven transport solutions include: its complete electronic document management system called Prompt Post; e-timestamp services, which can certify a document's existence or execution at a point in time; and know-your-customer services.

For the solutions developed via the partnership, this involves the Thailand Post business alliance, which brings the strengths of the organisation to benefit allied organisations in the form of a sharing economy.

Thailand Post formed a joint venture with logistics firm JWD and courier Flash Express to run cold chain express delivery under the Fuze Post brand.

Transport and logistics generates 47.6% of total revenue for the company, followed by the postal group at 31.3%, the international service group with 15.9%, the financial business group at 1.78%, the retail business group with 2.78%, and other business at 0.66%.
