Thailand eases Covid pre-travel rules and scraps masks for UK travellers

Thailand will lift pre-registration Covid restrictions for foreign visitors in a bid to boost tourism.

Thai authorities confirmed on Friday that it will lift its strict entry rules as well as scrapping face masks.

From July 1, the country will halt its "Thailand Pass" system, that requires UK travellers to seek approval to enter the country prior to arrival.

The move is in response to slower infection rates and a high vaccine uptake.

Thailand is a hugely popular travel destination, but its tourism sector have been vocal on the country's stringent Covid rules.

Travellers have had to submit multiple documents, from vaccine to recovery certificates, and hotel bookings, resulting in a slowing of the sector's recovery.

According to Reuters, Thailand saw 40 million foreign visitors in 2019, but was visited by less than 1% of that number in 2021, despite easing quarantine rules.

While tourism has recently picked up, it is nowhere near recovered, with jobs and businesses axed due to lack of customers.

Authorities also said the use of face masks would be voluntary from July 1, but urged people to wear them in crowded places or if suffering from health conditions..

According to the World Health Organization, Thailand has experienced over 30,000 Covid deaths since 2019.

However, a high vaccination rate of 80% has helped the country to contain outbreaks.
