Thai GP organisers expect 'great event'

Moto2 rider Somkiat Chantra.

The 2022 Thailand Grand Prix motorcycling event will be another success, organisers said on Friday.

The third edition of the tournament will take place again at Chang International Circuit in Buri Ram from Sept 30 to Oct 2.

It will be held under the theme "Thailand to the World" as organisers hope it will help promote the country.

Napintorn Srisunpang, vice minister for tourism and sports, told a press conference that the Thailand Grand Prix will help the country earn income from a large number of tourists.

"It will be a great event," he said.

"It will show to the world that Thais can organise a big event."

The first two Thailand Grand Prix editions were organised in 2018 and 2019.

The event was cancelled in 2020 and 2021 due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Also at yesterday's press conference were Sports Authority of Thailand (SAT) governor Gongsak Yodmani, sponsors and Thai Moto2 rider Somkiat Chantra.

Tickets are available at 7-Eleven shops or www.allticket.com.

Organisers claimed Grand Stand tickets, priced at 4,000 baht each, were sold out in three minutes.

Honda's Marc Marquez of Spain is the only racer to have won the Thailand MotoGP.

The MotoGP season is taking a break and will resume at Silverstone next month.

Yamaha's Fabio Quartararo leads the championship standings with 172 points, ahead of Aprilia's Aleix Espargaro who have 151 points.

Meanwhile, Idemitsu Honda Team Asia rider Somkiat will lead the Thai challenge in Moto2 in his home race.

The 23-year-old is the first Thai to win a race in the motorcycle world championships with his success in Indonesia earlier this year.
