TG4 viewers all saying the same thing as GAA broadcast features new split screen feature

Hurling fans who tuned in to watch Kilkenny's victory over Waterford witnessed a new split screen feature implemented by TG4.

It was essentially a GAA equivalent to NFL RedZone which allowed fans to watch more than just the one game over the 70 minutes.

For the most part, it was a typical match broadcast focused on the action in Nowlan Park.

But a couple of times per half when there was a lull in play, they would cut away to the below split screen with The Cats and The Déise relegated to a smaller slot.

Then one of the other affairs going on around the country such as Limerick's thrashing of Offaly would take centre stage as you were shown Cian Lynch blasting in a goal.

Other critical moments such as red cards and penalty decisions were also displayed throughout the afternoon.

It was the latest in a line of innovations when it comes to GAA match broadcasts from TG4, having previously dabbled in the use of picture-in-picture replays so that you don't miss the ensuing puck-out or kick-out after a score.

Viewers hailed the move as a creative idea that added to what was otherwise a forgettable enough final round of group games since there were quite a few dead rubbers.

Rónán tweeted: "TG4 are just deadly with their Gaelic Games coverage.

"Not an original observation but worth repeating all the same."

In a similar vein, Brian said: "TG4 doing a mini-version of RedZone.

"Class station, always showing vision even with a limited budget!"

While Patrick added: "TG4 gone all NFL RedZone #topclass #Gaa #TG4"

And Darragh said: "TG4 taking the RedZone approach this Sunday #triplebox."

Finally, Mick quipped: "Thought it was brilliant creativity as usual by TG4 today.

"They actually made a terrible hurling league format look interesting today.

"Maybe GAA should ask TG4 producers to have an input into its competition structures."

On occasion there was the odd example of growing pains as you could hear multiple commentary teams speaking over one another but that was the only minor quibble most had with it.

In relation to this, John said: "Needs tweaking and probably better running as an alternate option on TG4 Player but kudos to TG4 Sport for trying it."
