Texas synagogue hostage-taker killed by multiple gunshot wounds, medical examiner says

The armed man who took four people hostage at a Colleyville, Texas, synagogue on Saturday was killed by multiple gunshot wounds after an FBI team raided the building, according to the Tarrant County medical examiner.

Police previously have not said whether Malik Faisal Akram was killed by law enforcement, or whether he died by suicide shortly after the hostages escaped out of a side door at Congregation Beth Israel, ending the 11-hour standoff. None of the hostages were injured.

Akram, 44, died at 9:22 p.m. from multiple gunshot wounds and his death is listed as a homicide.

It’s not clear how many times or where Akram was shot; his full autopsy report was not available Friday afternoon.

It’s also not clear how many officers fired their weapons. The FBI is expected to hold a news conference later Friday.

Authorities are continuing to investigate Akram’s movements in the days leading up to the siege, during which he demanded the release of a federal prisoner being held in nearby Fort Worth. They are also investigating how Akram got the handgun he used during the siege and whether he received any local help.
