Texas Superfan Matthew McConaughey Reacts to Longhorns’ Loss to Oklahoma

Award-winning actor Matthew McConaughey was hoping Texas would notch another signature victory on Saturday against Oklahoma in this year’s Red River Rivalry in Dallas.

Prior to the Big 12 showdown, McConaughey joined the crew on ESPN’s College GameDay, sharing that the Longhorns were on a “mission” this season with hopes of competing for a College Football Playoff national championship. When Texas kicker Bert Auburn booted a 47-yard field goal with 1:17 to play in regulation to give the Longhorns a 30–27 advantage, it appeared that Texas would pick up another prolific win.

That’s until Dillon Gabriel delivered on a five-play, 75-yard drive that ended with a three-yard touchdown pass to Nic Anderson, securing a 34–30 victory for the Sooners. After the game, McConaughey, a Texas alumnus, said the Longhorns left too much time on the clock for the Sooners to strike back.

“Wow, that was a rollercoaster right there, man,” McConaughey said. “That was tough, man. Left in too much time on the clock at the end, didn’t we? Hell of a game man, hats off to OU. Team came out on the front foot. Great emotional football they played, well played, Sooners. See you next year. Till then, mean times and all times. Hook ’em.”

Texas (5–1) will enter its bye week before returning to action against Houston on Oct. 21.
