Texas shooting: Police release photo of suspect after five dead including 8-year-old boy

The suspect being hunted by police over the mass shooting in Texas that left five dead has been identified as 38-year-old Francisco Oropeza.

Five people including an eight-year-old were killed after the shooting in a home in the Trails End area of San Jacinto County, Texas.

Two female victims were discovered in the bedroom lying on top of two surviving children, authorities have said.

According to Sheriff Greg Capers, multiple victims, all from the same family, were found shot "execution style" inside the family home.

Police have said they had asked the suspect to stop firing his weapon because they were trying to get their baby to sleep.

San Jacinto County Sheriff Greg Capers said authorities were still searching for the 39-year-old suspect following the overnight shooting in the town of Cleveland, about 45 miles (72 kilometres) north of Houston.

He said the suspect, whom he did not identify, used an AR-style rifle in the shooting.

A heavy police presence was spotted at the scene.

The incident started out as a harassment call to 911 just after 11.30pm on Friday night.

The confrontation followed family members walking up to the fence and asking the suspect to stop shooting rounds, Capers said.

The suspect responded by telling them that it was his property, according to Capers, and that one person in the house got a video of the suspect walking up to the front door with the rifle.

When police arrived, they found two women dead at the front of the house, and a man dead in the living room.

Regarding the women, Sheriff Capers said: "In my opinion, they were actually trying to take care of the babies and keep them babies alive".

Three of the victims were women and one was a man. Their names were not released. Capers said the victims were between the ages of 8 and about 40 years old.

Authorities have previously been to the suspect’s home, according to Capers. “Deputies have come over and spoke with him about him shooting his gun in the yard,” he said.

Capers said some of those in the house had just moved from Houston earlier in the week, but he did not know whether they were planning to stay there.

“The Mexican male subject, he has been known to shoot his 223 out in his front yard, which is evident by the shell casings that are laying in the front yard,” said the San Jacinto County Sheriff’s Office.

Montgomery County SWAT rushed to the scene and cleared several properties around the crime scene. Police believes he has fled the county.

The US is setting a record pace for mass killings in 2023.

The violence is sparked by a range of motives: murder-suicides and domestic violence; gang retaliation; school shootings and workplace vendettas. All have taken the lives of four or more people at once since Jan. 1.
