Texas police admit ruling gunman inactive was ‘the wrong decision’

Families and community members have gathered to remember the 19 children and two adult teachers who died in last Tuesday’s massacre at Robb Elementary in Uvalde, Texas.

Many laid flowers and others were pictured holding candles following the first funeral visitations for shooting victims 10-year-old Amerie Jo Garza and 10-year-old Maite Rodriguez.

Eleven funerals for child victims and their teacher Irma Garcia are planned this week.

Elsewhere, the family of Salvador Ramos have sought donations to help to pay the medical bills of his grandmother, Celia “Sally” Gonzales, 66, who was shot “in the face and left to die alone in her home by her very own grandson”.

She was the 18-year-old’s first victim before 19 children and two teachers at the Robb Elementary School in Uvalde were shot dead on 24 May.

On Tuesday, at least two senators are expected to meet virtually to see whether there is a bipartisan path forward on gun legislation, after US president Joe Biden  said there is “no rational basis” for high-powered rifles.
