At least 15 people have been killed in an elementary school shooting in the United States after "an active shooter" opened fire.
Robb Elementary Schol in Ulvade, Texas was placed on lockdown after gunshots were heard at around 11.45am.
Government officials confirmed that 14 students and a schoolteacher are dead and over a dozen have been injured, the Mirror reports.
Uvalde Police Department confirmed on their Facebook page that the shooter was detained in police custody shortly after 1pm.
"There is an active shooter at Robb Elementary," a spokesperson said on Twitter, "Law enforcement is on site.
"Your cooperation is needed at this time by not visiting the campus. As soon as more information is gathered it will be shared."
It comes after the school had reported that there was an "active shooter" in their area. Reports state that the is presumed dead.
It is believed that a 45-year-old was hospitalised after being grazed by a bullet and 13 students were taken to hospital for treatment.
A police bus for “mass casualty” events was seen arriving at the Uvalde Memorial Hospital where two children were confirmed dead.
A child and a woman are also said to be receiving treatment at the University Health in San Antonio.
The hospital noted that the 66-year-old woman is in critical condition while the child's current condition is unknown.
Governor Greg Abbott said: "At least 14 students were killed and one teacher is dead after an active shooter incident at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas, on Tuesday."
Robb Elementary School is located around 60 miles east of the Mexico border and around 80 miles west of San Antonio.
The Uvalde Consolidated Independent School District confirmed a shooter was at the school and asked people to avoid the area.
A representative at the school earlier clarified that the shooting took place off campus, according to local reports.
Police officials are yet to release further details about the incident.
