Texas Republicans Criticize Biden's Parole Program For Migrants

Joe Biden White house U.S. President Joe Biden at the White House

Recent criticisms from Texas Republicans have brought attention to a parole program initiated by the Biden administration for four nationalities. The program has come under fire as statistics reveal that three of the top destinations for migrants under the program are located in Texas, exacerbating the already significant influx of migrants across the border.

During an eight-month period from January through August 2023, approximately 200,000 migrants entered the U.S. via the parole program. While the majority landed in Florida, significant numbers also arrived in Texas, specifically in Austin, Dallas, and Houston, with over 10,000 migrants traveling to these airports during that period.

The parole program was initially announced for Venezuelans in October 2022, allowing a limited number to enter the U.S. if they met specific criteria such as having a sponsor in the U.S. and passing vetting processes. Subsequently, in January 2023, the program was expanded to include Haitians, Nicaraguans, and Cubans, with up to 30,000 individuals per month permitted entry into the U.S.

Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas defended the program, stating that it provides a safe and orderly pathway for migrants to reach the United States and has contributed to a reduction in migration numbers for the included nationalities. DHS emphasizes that individuals entering under the program undergo rigorous security vetting and must meet eligibility criteria.

However, Republicans have raised concerns that the program exceeds the parole limits established by Congress and is being misused to facilitate mass migration. Critics argue that the Biden administration's policies, including the parole program, are exacerbating the ongoing border crisis and undermining national security.

Despite the stalemate in Washington, Texas Republicans are calling for action at the state level to address border security issues. They believe that governors must take the lead in securing the border, as they feel the federal government has failed to provide adequate support.

In light of the escalating frustration among Texans regarding the influx of migrants, there is a growing sentiment for stronger border security measures and a reevaluation of federal immigration policies.
