Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers proves he’s still a Buckeye at heart

Quinn Ewers may not be wearing Scarlet and Gray anymore, but it’s clear he still has a deep connection to Ohio State. Ewers, of course, was the most highly-rated quarterback ever since high school rankings began in the early 2000s, and spent a season in Columbus in 2021.

Ewers reclassified and enrolled late in the summer at OSU but saw little playing time as a true freshman. The Southlake, Texas native had always been a Texas Longhorns fan and decided to transfer back home the following season where he’s spent the past two seasons leading Steve Sarkisan’s team.

But old habits die hard. At the recent SEC media days, Ewers was asked about an early season trip to Ann Arbor to face Michigan. He speaks about the environment and how big of a game it will be … but he just can’t bring himself to say the “M” word as he finishes with “The team up north.”

It’s great to see guys who may not be directly tied to “The Game” still understand the magnitude of the rivalry. And while Ewers may have taken some hits from fans for leaving Ohio State, it’s this kind of language that will cause Buckeye Nation to quickly forgive.

Most everyone in Columbus will be rooting for the Longhorns on September 7, but a former Buckeye manning the helm will certainly add a little more luster to an already exciting matchup. And maybe a glimpse of what could have been if Ewers had chosen to stay at Ohio State.
