A 66-year-old man from Texas, Michael Martin Ochwat, was arrested and charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon following an incident involving a machete-type knife during a traffic quarrel in New Braunfels. The arrest was made by the New Braunfels Police Department.
The altercation took place on Monday around noon at the intersection of North Market Avenue and East San Antonio Street. Police officers responded to a report of a stabbing incident and found a 55-year-old male victim with a slash wound to his upper body at the scene.
Paramedics provided immediate medical attention to the victim before he was transported to a nearby hospital. Fortunately, the victim's condition was serious but stable, and he has since been released from the hospital.
According to the preliminary investigation, the victim and another driver were involved in a dispute while in their respective vehicles. Both individuals exited their vehicles, at which point Ochwat confronted the victim with a machete-type knife, leading to the assault.
Ochwat was identified as the suspect and was subsequently served with an arrest warrant on Wednesday afternoon. He was taken into custody without incident and booked into the Comal County Jail. Ochwat has since been released on a $50,000 bond.
This incident serves as a reminder of the potential dangers that can arise from conflicts on the road and the importance of resolving disputes peacefully and responsibly to avoid such violent confrontations.
